for 35-40k thats about 20-22 per hr

of course thats pounds, and wages are higher in the uk.

but really its hard to compare salary to wages

You can make 50$ an hour in software dev the same way a day laborer hanging outside of Home Depot can make 50$ an hour on a job. Get offered 50$ to do a job and finish it in an hour.

One can make numbers like that by freelancing, but it's silly to try to compare hourly wages or salary to such things.
