psp Next PSP To Feature Sliding Screen?

Oh that's right. More new PSP rumours. We've had a few surface lately, but this latest one is awfully specific, involving the machine's actual design, as well as its insides.

The last rumour came courtesy of IGN, who said the next version of Sony's handheld console would feature "a multi-touch screen, Bluetooth support, integrated GPS and a hard drive". Sony got quite nasty in shooting that one down.

Today's, however, comes from VG247, who see things a little differently. According to "a highly-trusted source", the next PlayStation Portable won't be an all-new PSP. Its internal architecture will be the same as current models, meaning any and all changes will be cosmetic ones.

And those changes involve the addition of a sliding front screen, which is normally employed in mobile phones - including many of Sony's own models - to cut down on size.

There's no mention of other features rumoured thus-far, including those involving touch-screen input.

As far as rumours go, this certainly seems the most (relatively, of course) plausible to date, because it fits with Sony's long-running company plan of eschewing drastic, radical changes in favour of iterative improvements, which normally take the form (especially when it comes to PlayStation products) of smaller, sexier cases surrounding existing hardware.

And of course, sales will be terrible unless the thing is crackable.

A lot of new phones have a similar sliding mechanism to that sliding psp we all drool over, they obviously need a thicker frame around the screen but it would work

Sounds nice having a sliding screen but makes you wonder, is it a PSP2? or just another hardware revision.

Cause underneath that sliding screen there could be a lot of cool things.

    - Two analog sticks, not likely as it has to be backwards compatible with the old models that lack this feature

    - Maybe a QWERTY keyboard, but then again, they're about to cancel Go Mesenger

guess it's just a rumour, there are a lot of hardware revisions already for such small period of time. I think noone can keep up no matter how much money they got.

You wont be spending money on a new piece of hardware once a year.

I'm thinking that this is going to be a psp 4000.
It's possible that it might be a psp2, but with all the great games scheduled for this year, it's hard to think Sony would put out the psp2.

I wanna see some news about the psp2, but not until late this year with a later release date.

Also, Sony puts out too many revisions for the psp, true, but the old ones work fine so they're not forcing us to buy it.
Let them figure out what works and what doesn't before the psp2 so when that comes around it's better than we could even dream.
