Good stuff, I'm having trouble finding the link on the page you provided though.
edit: Nevermind I saw the timer.
I found following link in the forums:

Apparently someone is working on the GALAGA mod.
Currently it's not 100% complete - some graphics, music and enemy patterns are not modified, but it already looks nostalgically cool :-)
Check it out ...

I been working on a Super Mario mod. The only thing I didn't change was the music cause I don't have the proper converter. Maybe someone could help with that. I spent the last 2 days on this. I had to find a place to share it.

Modded:
The ship is Mario in a flying kart
The homing missile is a bullet bob the turns into a huge one.
The shield is red turtles
I increased the killray by 5X
The homing laser is Swarming Yoshi's
You shoot Yoshi eggs
I haven't fought the last boss yet so I'm not sure how he came out.
BG's are Marioish
All enemies are from the world of Mario.

The archive always comes back as 0 bytes for some reason... why don't you attach it to this post?

I am not aware of any software to convert conventional (mp3/wave/ogg) formats to tracker music (s3m, xm, etc)
I believe you can play ogg files as sountracks for the game (if not I can code it in), but you may loose a bit of CPU cycles.. Give it a try and see how it works out with different bitrates.. (you can convert mp3s to ogg with a number of converters)
You can modify the game scripts to make the game harder or easier, longer or shorter... so you can get to last level in just 2 minutes, if needed..
EDIT: I managed to get the file so I am mirroring it here..
The graphics is pretty cool..
You may want to work on in game messages and attack sequences. just experiment with levelXX.dat files - their format is pretty simple...
If you get stuck with ogg conversions you may want to get some tracker music @ http://modarchive.org.. (type "mario" in the search box) ...just make sure that the number of voices in the song is ~4
Ok I changed the music and text but I can't get the intro music to work. The file is there but it won't play.
