Indeed, you can't backup everything on the PS3 anyway. The backup function only backs up certain things.

I'm not sure what your aim is, but 1 external hard-drive would suffice if im understanding you right.

If you end up with 2 hard-drives (2.5" Sata) just backup your PC hard-drive with a external, and slap it in your PS3 and the PS3 will format it for you.

Then slap the PS3 HDD in your PC and format it, obviously you would need to re-install your OS. Then get all of your backup files off the external.

While it is a pain in the ass, it's nice that it is there to do.
