Just to let you know I tried this on my psp ver 2.5. I can get to Mario Kart 64 main screen but it just hang there. I put the file in
PSP/Game/ and theN64 folder in the main root.

Maybe you can see how to make it work on ver 2.0+

How do I actually load up a rom? I can't get past the "load rom, screen size etc" screen. When I press "load rom", my PSP freezes and crashes.

Am I suppose to be using the 1.5 folder or 1.0/2.0 folder? Thanks.

im on firmware 2.5 and all i can get monkey to do is crash what am i doing wrong?

Try using the different version like the 1.5 one load up the emu from "Monk" I have heard that helps or something.
