nintendo ds problem help please

ok hello everyone i hope someone can help me out i got a ds (fat) from a friend everything works except the initial settings will not save so i cant do anything with it nintendo wants 85 to fix it but we dont have the money now and my mom just ordered a ds game for my bday is there anything i can do? or is it just a nice paper weight until i can send it in? any help is great and thank you
