upgrading my chipped psp without bricking it

hey guys
i have a chipped psp which has system software 3.71 M33-2, but will not play new games for example fifa 10, gran tursmo. is this due to it needing an update?? i have had this chipped version for nearly 2 years now an have had no problems with it.
if so does nyone now where i get the update from and how i go about putting the update onto my psp??
will be thankfull of any suggestions

new games need newer fw.
i know for gran turismo you need at least 5.50 gen-b cfw.

at least i heard someone say that they got it working on that fw
