Gaming charity Extra Life has announced that it has raised more than USD 150,000 in donations from gamers competing in 24-hour marathons around the world.

Organised by blog Sarcastic Gamer and the Texas Children's Hospital, the haul has already surpassed that of the previous year. As a result the Extra Life website is extending the deadline for donations until October 31.

The majority of organised marathons took place on October 17 at 8am, according to the local time of participating gamers. Fund raisers were then required to play games for a 24-hour period, although not necessarily non-stop - with many making up the time on subsequent days.

As a result the final total is expected to rise further, with every participant that raises more than USD 192 receiving an official T-shirt. "We have truly made a difference in the lives of children battling pediatric cancer", said a statement on the official website.
