General games It's Official: PS3 Has The Best Library Ever

    via 1up

Former Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi (above) may not be all that happy about how his PlayStation 3 is officially the heaviest game console ever released. But there's another statistic that he'd likely be more delighted to hear: According to a survey of Famitsu magazine's review scores, the PS3 has the highest-quality game library out of any console currently in the marketplace.

According to figures released in the current issue, 77 out of the 171 PS3 games Famitsu has reviewed as of the end of 2009 received a total score of 32/40 or greater, qualifying it for a Gold award. This means that 45.05% of the PS3's library in Japan is "gold" -- according to Famitsu's review staff, anyway.

This puts the PS3 just slightly ahead of the Xbox 360 percentage-wise -- over in Japan, 104 out of 240 360 titles reviewed got gold awards, 43.33% of the library. The good news continues in the portable realm, with 23.2 percent of PSP titles going gold versus 17.14% of Nintendo DS releases.

Here's a complete rundown of Famitsu gold awards divided by console. Note that Famitsu got a lot less stingy with review scores around the turn of the century, which is why the classic systems have far fewer 32-point-or-greater titles.

    1. PlayStation 3 (77/171, 45.03%)
    2. Xbox 360 (104/240, 43.33%)
    3. GameCube (87/240, 36.25%)
    4. PSP (90/388, 23.20%)
    5. Xbox (40/185, 21.62%)
    6. Nintendo 64 (38/183, 20.77%)
    7. PlayStation 2 (393/1997, 19.68%)
    8. Wii (50/257, 19.46%)
    9. Nintendo DS (152/887, 17.14%)
    10. Dreamcast (62/407, 15.23%)
    11. Game Boy Advance (90/618, 14.56%)
    12. Sega Saturn (52/930, 5.59%)
    13. PlayStation (130/2645, 4.93%)
    14. Super NES (55/1407, 3.90%)
    15. NES (34/955, 3.56%)
    16. PC Engine (22/628, 3.5%)
    17. Genesis (11/534, 2.06%)
    18. Game Boy (15/1071, 1.40%)
    19. Wonder Swan (1/179, 0.55%)
    20. Game Gear (0/184, 0%)

My problem is that every single one of the top 10 highest rated games from Famitsu is a Japanese game on a Japanese console, obviously it's done by Japanese reviewers so there is limitations in their reviews, but it just shows how biased they are and their reviews can't be taken as serious on an international scale, all those top games were translated to English so the only true way to judge is with English speaking reviewers.

Game Boy had some great games but like most Nintendo handhelds it has a lot of shovelware for kids.

Anyway, it's nice to see PSP is #4. This should shut up those people that say PSP has no good games. 90/388 of reviewed PSP games got Gold? That's very impressive.

This illustrates the problem with commercial reviewing in general; marketing teams for companies that advertise in the magazine pressure reviewers to bump their scores up over time.

But let's give them the benefit of the doubt and take their reviews as objective. The PS2 still wins based on these statistics. Do gamers care what percentage of games are great or how large the actual number of great games is? I think the answer is obvious, and as such, PS3 is only 8th on the list.
