Command and Conquer 3: The Forgotten, a massive mod made by an 80 person team spread across 13 countries, went viral yesterday after its release. What's still more interesting is how quickly Command and Conquer developer Electronic Arts jumped on the project, with Lead Designer Samuel Bass writing, "It’s amazing what people with dedication can do," and highlighting the new faction, full campaign and new Full Motion Videos. After the flop of Command and Conquer 4 last spring left the pioneering RTS series with an uncertain direction, developer Electronic Arts promised to return with a more fan-centric approach. Are huge fan-developed projects with publisher support the future, especially with Blizzard similarly backing mods for its games, or are corporations too reluctant to give up their turf?"
