It does write files to the PSP flash, but it doesn't overwrite any files that are already there. this means it doesn't alter the PSP, therefore minimalising the risk of bricking to practically nothing.
I have a 2.71 PSP and am using eloader 0.9.9 to load all my homebrew. It works quite well, but now there's finally a GBA emu for 2.71, but it only works on this new XMB loader. How safe is it anyway? It writes to the flash, which gives it a minimal risk, but this new version says that it patches the kernel. How safe is that, anyway? Does that write to the flash, or does it work in memory only? What's the risk of bricking and how many have bricked using it?

yeh it's not too risky, not like a downgrader...u need revision C also to play the gpSP 0.7 emu
the risks of bricking your psp by using it is really really slim

It only writes to your PSP's flash ONCE. After that, it's all good.![]()
