Sorry to bump the thread, but here is the updated guideI realise you can use an auto installer, but I prefer manual if it can be done easily

Guide to installing 2.71 SE, and setting up recovery for downgrade.
If you don't yet have the updater, you can get it from:
Dark Alex's Official Site
It's the link named "2.71 Special Edition - Revision A custom firmware" incase you couldn't find it
Note: I am not responsible for any possible damage caused by this guide. Use it at your own risk.
You need to downgrade, or already be on 1.5 first! You cannot upgrade from any other firmware apart from 1.5!
Update: Due to reports of people successfully upgrading from custom firmware, I no longer recommend doing it from unaltered firmwareYou can do it if you already have harleyg's custom firmware.
1. Get the 1.5, and the 2.71 eboots from somewhere.
2. Go into USB mode. Rename your "GAME" folder, to "GAME150". (Note: This step is only neccasary if you have 1.50 eboots in there.)
3. Make a new directory in PSP, called GAME (as the old one has been renamed.)
4. Extract the "seupdmaker" and the "%seupdmaker" folder, and place them in PSP\GAME
5. Extract the 1.50 eboot, and rename it to "150.PBP" and place it in the "seupdmaker" folder.
Also do the same with the 2.71 eboot, but rename it instead: (yes, you guessed it) "271.PBP" And place that in the same folder.
6. Exit USB Mode. Run the update maker eboot on the PSP.
It should say "Opening and checking 1.50 EBOOT...", followed by "Extracting 1.50 subset and packing..."
Next it will say "Opening and checking 2.71 EBOOT..." followed by "Extracting 2.71 Firmware and packing...".
After it quits, it should now have created a new file called "DATA.DXAR" in the same folder. This file should be exactly 17,483,018 BYTES.
To check the size of your file, assuming you use Microsoft Windows, while in USB mode right click on the file and click "properties". The size of the file is mentioned in the "Size" section. (Unsurprisingly.)
7. After it quits back to the XMB, go back into USB mode. Copy the "271seflasher" and "%271seflasher" to the PSP\GAME directory. Copy the "DATA.DXAR" file from the "seupdmaker" directory to the "271seflasher" directory.
8. Run it on your PSP, it should come up with an agreement. Press "x", and it should flash.
There you have it, you should have a shiny new 2.71SE PSP
Optional: Setting up recovery, for re-flashing to 1.50. Again, I'm not responsible for any possible damage caused.
1. Copy (or extract from the zip), the folder in the "files for recovery" folder named "RECOVERY" to PSP\GAME. You should now have four files in the "RECOVERY" folder, named:
- decryptprx.prx
- EBOOT.PBP
- extprxs.prx
- libpsardumper.prx
2. Rename the official update (EBOOT.PBP) you want to revert to, "UPDATE.PBP" (after any extraction from the zip/rar). This can be any firmware update from 1.50 to 2.71.
3. Place this in the "RECOVERY" folder that is now in PSP\GAME.
You can also set it to reflash 2.71 SE should you want to, by renaming it's "EBOOT.PBP" to "UPDATE.PBP" and placing along with the "DATA.DXAR" in the "RECOVERY" folder.
And there you have it! You should now be able to reflash or downgrade using the option in the recovery menu
Not tested myself (as I really like 2.71 SE, and can't see ever wanting to downgrade), but I've deciphered the readme to step by step.

hey if i install this can i literaly potentionally update to the sony's new firmware and get the ps1 emu when it comesout and then use recovery mode to get back to the SE 2.71 firmware? So it would act as a 1.50 when we wanted to play GTA sdorta speak we'd just have to keep entering and exiting that firmware. . .
Thx Cloudhunter, I was uneasy b4 reading ur tutorial. gonna try it now (I just know i am gonna brick it soon cuz of all the stuff i keep doing. :P) lol

hey can anyone possible dump this firmware so we can run it via devhook on our 1.50 firmwares???????!!!?!?!?!?!?!? The risk would be nearly nothign if we could just throw this into the DH folder and launch it on our 1.50's id ont know about you guys but this is not changing text or backgroun this is the entire flash rewritten!
I did the 2.6 to 1.5 downgrade and now have a red screen in the backgroud instead of this months Orange. Homebew runs fine but my icons are blocky. I know this has nohting to do with this tread but I have no where else to turn. What can I do/is my PSP in danger?
I can confirm this works 100% back to 1.50!Originally Posted by Cloudhunter
Afraid not my friend. When you do a firmware update, it wipes the flash cleanOriginally Posted by YourStillWithMe

err then this is useless because we can't run a version changer on this. . . . has anyone gotten a version changer to work correctly?
Why would you NEED a version changer? It runs all games up to 2.71, which is more than you can do with a version changer on 1.50. However, it is possible that someone will see if you can change the version in this to make it think it's a higher version.Originally Posted by YourStillWithMe

EDIT:The entire flash is rewritten when you update, or downgrade the firmware. It would be possible to get it to work on devhook, but I don't know how it could be accomplished, you have to know what you are doing.Originally Posted by YourStillWithMe
