Making your own headset adapter: tutorial

This is the first time I’m making something for the psp homebrew scene.
I was very interested in the program PSP Memo Recorder of lteixeira so I was searching for a way to test this program without buying the SOCOM headset. I found a site for a “do it yourself psp headset adapter” but it wasn’t that clear to me so I figured it out myself.

In the next tutorial I’m showing with pictures how I made the adapter without soldering.

Things you need for making the adapter:

Scissors, cutting tang and isolation tape (I don’t like soldering but this is possible also).

2 female 3.5mm mini jack

1 four conductor 3.5mm mini jack (check ebay for ipod a/v cable or ps one a/v cable)

Cut al the cables but leave enough space to connect them (or when you make a mistake or strip to much). Also strip all the cables and wires.
Only the coper wires can be twisted togheter.

It should look like this for the four conductor 3.5mm mini jack cable.

The 2 female 3.5mm mini jacks must look like this.

One of the female 3.5mm mini jacks will become the microphone input.
LOOK OUT, TAKE ONLY ONE FEMALE 3.5 mm MINI JACK.
So take (just) one of the female 3.5mm mini jacks and cut the white wire. It’s not needed anymore.

Make sure that the top/tip (the copper part) of the white cable does not make contact with the red cable or the copper wire.
(Twist the copper wires togheter)

The other female 3.5mm mini jack is needed for the stereo sound.
(Twist the copper wires togheter)

No we have the ingredients for make the adapter.
The next part is about twisting the right wire to the right wire.

Now you can twist all the (loose) copperwires togheter but the best is to do this last. In the next picture I didn't draw these copperwires because te all go togheter.
Make sure these twisted copper wires don't make contact with each other cables. Tape them if posible at the end.

This is how it should be connected/twisted.

first the earphones (red to yellow, white to white. Tape these so they can't make contact with other cables, can't say this enough, hehe)

next is the microphone. It's getting hard now to twist it to the wires (theres not much space when you want to do it good and nice).

this what it looks like in action.

Hope somebody can really do something with this tutorial (and read it, my english isn't that good).
For me it works fine and can go on testing the newer PSP Memo Recorder's

true, but you can make it less wires by cutting. Still for testing this works great.

Nice clear tutorial, however, I remember seeing another tutorial that showed you how to convert an xbox headset into a socom psp one. There was also another one that showed you how to turn your mobile phone headset/mic into a socom mic. I want to try that because I have those handy in the house. Now....If only I could get myself some solder and an iron.....
