I thought so as well, unless it converts them over sorta like some DVD Players convert reg. dvds to hd dvds.
480p...higher def than normal
If Wii doesn't support true HD then why does the cable say it supports 720p and 1080i modes?
I know this is weird. So maybe they're doing this to stop people complaining about how Wii doesn't have the graphics as the other. And they're putting it in a chord so those who don't want to spend the money and upgrade don't have to. Who knows though This is weird.

Here is the link if you want to buy it straight from nintendo's store. Only shipped in Canada and the US though.
Wii doesn't support HD. It supports 480p, which is a progressive scan version of a standard TVs resolutiom (480i), and looks slightly better, but it is in no way "High Definition".
You should be able to play the games when a TV is in 720 or 1080 mode, but it'll likely look WORSE than it does at the resolution it was designed for.
It seems the best way to play Wii games is at 480p (so that's 480 progressive scan, using component cables)
At the moment the highest defenition standard is 1080p, or 1920x1080 resolution running in progresive scan (80mhz?)
Wii can't do 1080p, this cord is only 1080i.. LOL "only 1080i" is pretty rediculess though, I'm happy knowing it can do 1080i and 720p. 1080p is better, but not extremely better.
However, as far as I've heard in the past, and the official nintendo component cord says, 480p is the best the wii can do. Still, 480p/i is not to shabby, compared to vga/svideo
