News/release via Redkawa
Wii Video 9 is a free video conversion application developed by Red Kawa. It allows you to convert your computer video files (like avi, divx, mpeg, etc.) into the specific video formats that are playable on the Wii.
Wii Video 9 can also be combined with Videora, another software application, and together they can let you automatically download and convert video for your Wii using BitTorrent and RSS technology.

oh, i didnt know the wii could play any movie files.
I've tried it. Its ok. It does exactly what it says it does. No more, no less.
The only problem is that the only video format that Wii supports is motion JPEG, so when you convert to that, it usually lowers quality and can make the file 10X the size.
Has anyone actually tired converting and playing a full length movie?
I don't have a Wii yet so I have no idea whether or not this sort of thing would be worth the effort.
Oddly enough, it seems that there are two answers to that question.
The official answer comes from Nintendo, and says that you can only play Quicktime movies on the Wii.
However, if you look at this program for the Mac, it seems that they are implying that the Wii plays AVI files.

AVI is a container, and AVI can be any number of formats depending on the fourcc code.
An AVI from a camera is mjpeg 99 times out of a hundred
An Avi from a PC is a divx or xvid 99 time out of a hundred
