Default Orange UK launches Europe's first Intel-powered smartphone

San Diego Android device will be pitched directly at the mid-range market, priced £199.
It's a pretty significant day for Intel, which has been trying to break into a mobile space dominated by ARM for many years.
The firm's Atom Z2460 processor is the key to this breakthrough. It's been specially designed for use in smartphones, and both Orange and Intel are at pains tp stress its advantages in terms of performance and - most importantly - battery life.
The San Diego, launched next week, features HD Voice, HD Video, 8MP camera with ‘burst’ capture mode, 4.03” capacitive display, A-GPS and Bluetooth 2.1.
It's been built by Asian OEM Gigabyte and continues Orange's commitment to own brand devices. Orange has certainly been the most successful of the UK operators in this regard, claiming around 20 per cent of its phones are now badged Orange.
In terms of UI, the San Diego is a pretty vanilla Android set-up, although it does come with pre-loaded Orange apps such as Orange Wednesdays....
