I'm looking more for something like you'd hear in an elevator in the 1920s or 30s

The intro from Trocadero's - No One sounds like elevator music. Try looking around for that. Trocadero is the band that did most of the songs for Red vs Blue, so ya know. They may still have it for free at www.redvsblue.com or a quick search on google may turn it up.
