Default ps1 games on 3.03 firmware?

I got a psp with firmware 3.03 for xmas, my parents must have updated it... I tried a few ps1 games on it, that all come up fine except just before i'm about to start playing them it says something like "This unit needs to be activated"

What does that mean ? how do I activate it?

... Also, i realise there is no way to downgrade, but what is it possible to do with a modchip, and are they easy to fit?

Thanks to anyone who can help...

Your parents hould not have updated.

You will need a PS3 to play ps1 games. If they didnt update it you could have played them without a PS3

awright i think i'll have to shell out 30 quid on a modchip then, that should enable me to use the homebrew and stuff?

I have checked me psp and i dont have the TA082 version.

Do you know how to fit the modchip as it requires soldering
