    its definately not doomed, but temporarily cripled perhaps. I disagree with the friend code system, but an avatar replacement would keep the same safety. I just wish that a simple PIN input could open up the network.

    And why not? I would say that Nintendo, far more than the other two companies, needs to ensure that younger users are safe online, due to their percieved "kiddie" image. Can u imagine the headlines? It was bad enough when the reports about kids viewing porn on their Wii came out.
    And as mentioned here (but completely ignored in the EGM story) you don't HAVE to have friend codes to play online, only if you want to play with your friends (the clue was in the name EGM......)
