    Default Questions before I purchase a PSP

    Hello everyone,

    I'm thinking about purchasing a PSP for homebrew fun and to have portable gaming/video. I do have some concerns though. Maybe someone could help me out by answering a few questions.

    1) I only use Linux as my computer OS. Will this limit my PSP experience in any way? Will I need Windows for anything that can't be done with Linux?

    2) Will it be possible to upgrade to the 3.03 OE-B firmware no matter what firmware my new psp comes with?

    3) Are there any accessories that would enhance my psp experience greatly? If so, what are they.

    I've already learned quite a bit by reading these forums. I hope to be able to contribute something back when I gain more knowledge about this great little system. Thanks for your time.

    1- linux shouldnt hurt you except in area's like using the gui's for converting ps1 games for use on 3.03 oe

    2- to upgrade to 3.03 oe you need to first be on 1.50. to be on 1.50 you may need to downgrade which is only possible from 2.80 and down a believe. may be wrong.

    3- a bigger memory stick.

    Thanks for the reply hallsguitar.

    I will be purchasing the PSP at a local Target store in the US. Am I correct in assuming the firmware will probably be higher than 2.80 thus leaving me unable to go from -> 1.5 -> 3.03 oe ?

    There seem to be lots of talk about people bricking their PSP on this forum. Is that easy to do or are these people being careless? I'm not trying to sound like I'm trolling. I just don't want a $200 paperweight.

    when you buy a brand new psp from a store the lastest version that it will be is 2.0, or 2.6 or even lower version =)

    make sure to look at the side of the box for the letter code: A = 1.5 confirmed
    B = 1.51 confirmed
    C = 1.52 confirmed
    D = 1.52 confirmed
    E = 1.52 confirmed
    F = 2.0 confirmed
    G = 2.01 confirmed
    H = 2.50 confirmed
    I = 2.60 confirmed
    J = 2.70 unconfirmed
    K = 2.71 confirmed
    L = 2.81 confirmed

    last time i when there, i found a bunch of K's and lucky me i found the only "I" at walmart

    1. yes its not very interactive with linux i have the same problem but its ok as long as you dont expect to much.
    2. not sure it usually depends on the PSP version,
    3. big mem stick only prefer 4gb.

    btw the sound is really low in PSP so use PQDVD converter to convert your video file it has an easier option for sound w/ video can increase and adjust then convert.

    3. bigger memstick, and if you plan to buy fighting games the grip that makes it feel like a ps2 controller helps ALOT especially on Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX.

    Get a PSP speaker system. Depending on what you plan on using your PSP for, you will need different speakers. (i.e. whether you plan to use the speakers while playing or whether you want to use them just for listening to music or watching movies).

    For playing games with:
    http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802526 (I have this one)
    http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802479

    For watching movies/listening to music ONLY:
    http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=801984
    http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802489

    You don't need to know my mental status. You probably don't want to, either.
