Exclamation Info for buying an xbox

I am in the process of buying either a new or used xbox to softmod... and the following two questions arise...

I may buy a used xbox from a friend, i beleive he has a 1v xbox, but he has played halo 2 and also Xbl and i was wandering if any of these facðors posed as an obstacle to soft mod that xbox

    or

I may buy a new xbox from a retail store... i am not sure as to what version this xbox may have...
(if anyone has info regarding the most common xbox version found in an US retail store i would gladly appreciate it.)

from what i have googled, i gathered that there are 8 xbox versions ranging from 1.0 to 1.6
(some sites said that softmodding a 1.6 xbox isnt even possible, while others claimed that softmods were flawless in a 1.6)

Also, i ask for advice from the pros in these great forums that have done any type of xbox softmodding
(please post any information that may be useful regarding this)

    ----------
I am buying an xbox because i want to run some of the best homebrewed app's such as XBMC, emulators and whatnot... i may even upgrade my harddrive if there is time for it

    ----------------------------------------
Thanks for your time, I salute you

I would buy your friends Xbox if he is selling it for a good deal and it is in good shape. I am 99.9% sure that you will be able to softmod it. The Halo 2 and XBL shouldn't be a problem.

yes, buy your friend one. Then if the dvd drive play badly, just remplace it with a PC LG GDR 8163b or 8164b. There is many guide for that. Why a old v1 - v1.4 and not a v1.6 ? first, because 1.6 motherboard don't have optional ram areas. You wont be able to had ram. Also, the 1.6 video chip isin't suitable for a linux OS.

Don't forget most of the emulators available for Xobx (like pcsxbox) are illegal because they are using the hacked SDK

The Xbox 360 will be hacked some time soon, especially since hackers have already gotten unsigned code to run on older 360 kernel. A few days ago a program was released by the Specialist that allows older 360 kernels to be dumped. This is a big step for the scene because this will probably lead to a downgrader and holes in the kernel.

Xbox 360 homebrew and emulaters will blow Xbox 1 homebrew away. The 360 is powerfull enough to emulate the Dreamcast, PS2, and Gamecube (and obviously Xbox 1). I am really looking forward to the day that the 360 is fully open to unsigned code. That why I just recently picked up a cheap core so I can still have the benefits of Xbox Live.
