I knew about this already but like most people i dont think its a good idea for 99.99% of PSP owners to try it,infact i would say dont but heres the info that Liquid Ice posted on his Hacks site.

Nem, the creator of the first PSP homebrew app, "Hello World" has reported some major findings on psp-dev. He claims to have been able to extract the 1.0 firmware on his PSP.
It's quite possible now that the dump of the original firmware is in the capable hands of a few really good programmers that we might see some tricks posted on how to update/downgrade firmware on our 1.5's without cracking open the case.
While he does provide instructions on how he did it, I would not recommend trying it. If your patient, and wait another week, I have a feeling there might be a much easier way in the works.
If your brave and have some good sodering skills, you can try it, using the instructions posted here:

i would personally leave it well alone, you can be sure the best in the psp scene are working on cracking it anyway, anything that involves me taking my PSP apart is a bridge too far for me.
Hmm ok i will wait then untill a great EBOOT.bpb is released

It will happen eventually. I am just surprised all this is happening not even 2 months after the psp was released here in the U.S.
Why not? The US release has nothing to do with anything. They've been working with the Japanese units. Thats why the Japanese versions are cracked.
