I think that Sony gives you back old used psp's with paint coming off.
I doubt he would send it to Sony though. It has a modchip in it that failed.

How about DCemu gives dark a little money for his psp? You know, he does keep this place alive nowdays and throwing away more money on a psp just to release more hacks for us is pretty honorable. Maybe reward him, even if its not the full price of the PSP?

I would guess it means he flashed something that would normally brick it, then the modchip coincidently failed at that very moment. That is my theory
