All this really boils down is, fanboys suck from all sides. While Blu-Ray and HD may have been unnecessary at this time, it is this pioneering of new technology that drives the business forward. For instance when Cyan released Myst on CD, when almost NO ONE had CD-Roms...

Its these practices that drive this industry forward. That keep it out of the dark ages. Sure many of the past game consoles may have had unneeded technology in them, but if not for them we wouldn't be at the stage we are at now.

The PS3 is certainly hefty in price, I'll admit that and I cringe damn near every time I see something I want for it and its like 60 - 70 USD. But to Sony's credit, at least they gave us a console that is open. As long as the peripheral or drive is in a format supported, you can use it.

Whether this is the case with the Xbox 360, I have no idea; but I do know this, Sony got it right with the PS3, it just needs its time to mature.

I think you make some great points here and the Myst example was pretty good.

The Blue-Ray is a different sort of creature though. For those of you lucky peoples out there with HD-TV's it might be useful, but for the majority of us.. Well its sort of worthless. On the Data storage side of things it might be cool to have a bunch of High Def textures and stuff.. but It isnt really necessary and considering the fact that HD stuff looks like $#@! on normal TV's it might actually make things worse for the rest of us. It isnt the fact that the PS3 is priced so high that makes me wince... Its the fact that they put stupid unnecessary crap in it which of course, shot the price way up that makes it look like a bad purchase to me.

If you have an HDTV, the money to spend, and you demand beautiful games (though I havnt seen anything too stunning on the PS3 yet, just demos) then this might be a good console for you. For the majority of us poor kids with home theaters that make you want to party like its 1999... Well, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

I have only watched Talladega Nights on Blu-Ray, but you'd be surprised. And on my SDTV, the quality is better than DVDs.

It doesn't look like $#@! on an SDTV though, so its not a total waste. I don't think Sony would have adopted it if that were case.

It seemed real crisp and clean. Maybe it was just wishful thinking, I don't know. I suppose I'd have to watch it on DVD to compare directly, but I have watched other movies on DVD on the PS3 and it seemed that Talladega Nights was much cleaner on BluRay than the other movies on DVD I had seen.
