light gun issue

So nostalgia got the better of me and I got a dreamcast off ebay with a few games. It also came with HOTD2 and a light gun. Now whenever I try to play with the gun, the screen flashes white (when I shoot) but I can see no crosshair on the screen and I can't shoot! When I go to gun calibration it won't allow me to shoot the second target. All rather frustrating really and I am considering sending it back!

What kind of TV are you using? Only CRTs are known to work with light guns, but it sounds like you have one since it found the first calibration shot. If so, you can crank up the brightness and contrast levels on your TV to make it easier for the gun to detect where it shot.
