    psp PSPComic v0.9.7 Beta

News/release from Archaemic: - UPDATED WITH THE BUGFIX RELEASE

PSPComic v0.9.7 Beta is here, with a long list of new features:

    v0.9.7 Beta (2007-05-05)
    - [Feature] Configuration file is now XML
    - [Feature] New manga mode, which makes comics start from the right instead of
    from the left
    - [Feature] Menu now shows current state of togglable items
    - [Feature] New battery meter shows remaining battery percentage in the menu. If
the text is red, the battery is low. If it is yellow, the power is plugged in.
    - [Feature] The clock frequency menu now allows any value between 20 MHz and 333
    MHz to be selected
    - [Feature] Bookmarks have been added. For more information, please see the menu
    options section
    - [Feature] 8-bit images now support resampling
    - [Bugfix] Fixed scrolling bug, which made the program stop scrolling after
    some time with the D-Pad
    - [Bugfix] Removing an open RAR or CBR file while the program is using that file
will no longer cause a crash when the page is changed.
    - Sped up resampling
    - And many more minor changes...

The zoom box and precaching will be added in the next release. The zoom box requires a rather large internal reimplementation (but it will be possible to do) and precaching requires some advanced threading, which I should be able to do, but I'm not sure. Please note that precaching will only speed up image loading, not image resizing, which is the primarily where speed is being lost.

Please note that PSPComic is still in beta, and may be buggy, especially the bookmark functions.

    Default PSPComic vs PePviewer

I've not used PePviewer, but its description states that it is a "picture viewer". PSPComic, on the other hand, is a "comic viewer".

The difference is that a "comic" consists of all of the scans from the comic, or any other book, which are then combined together into either a rar or zip archive. These archives are then renamed with extensions of .cbr and .cbz, respectively. The cb stands of course for "comic book".

I've always used a program for the pc called, surprise, comic book reader, to read these; PSPComic now makes it possible to read these on the go. (Well, they were portable first on the DS, but we won't get into that here. )

Now you may be asking why you would want to go to all of the bother to use a program such as this in order to utilize yet *another* file format. For me the answer is simple; completeness. It is very frustrating to download a series of comic scans in a simple folder format and start reading, only to discover that you are missing a page that no amount of googling will uncover.

Comic book files, i.e. .cbr and .cbz files, on the other hand, have always been, in my experience, complete. Why go to the bother of making the archive if you don't have all of the scans? You can make your own comic files easily enough by simply rar'ing or zip'ing them and then renaming the extension.

I know that this explanation was rather long winded, but I hope that it helps.

Actually, that's the best and most concise explanation of CBR/CBZ I've seen.

My congrats to Kip as well, for a great program that's really taken off!
