You should be able to boot from it, I havent seen a computer that couldnt boot from usb in 10 years. You have to change some settings in your BIOS for example your boot priority is probally something like Hard Drive, CD-Rom, Removable. You want to change it so its booting from the usb cdrom first. Also enable the option allow boot from other devices.
Just tinker around in your bios changing boot settings, if you screw anything up then just default everything. Ubuntu isnt a very good operating system by the way, well I personally disliked it.
