he told slughorn in book 6 that the number 7 was the most powerfully magical number

so he decided to make 7 horcruxes, with the 7th bit in his body

1. the ring
2. the cup
3. the locket
4. the snake
5. the bit on his body
6. the diary
7. the tiara

then dumdumdummm

8. the bit in harrys body

It was quite well hidden. Not many people knew about RoR (at least not until DA started to use it). Even Dumbledore didn't know about it until he accidentally found it in one of the first books.
And very few of the people who accidentally found it, understood how it worked and were able to find it again.

Since nobody was supposed to know about the horcruxes at all, and especially not what the horcrux was (Rowena Rawenclaws diadem). It would be quite difficult to find it among all those other things.
If Harry hadn't known where in RoR it was, he would have had to search the whole room. That would probably have taken hours and why would he even search in RoR to begin with?

It was pure luck that Harry had seen the diadem in RoR before, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to find it.

he is really stupid cuz he kept all of his horcruxes in every day items in the same country! He went Albania right? Why didnt he leave a few horcruxes there? HP would never have gone there... seriously, that old freak was dumb as hell...

Indeed... been here for a while.

Anyway, He did make 7, because the bit of his soul inside him isn't a Horcurx itself. Also he believed that is was important to have the Horcruxes at least fairly close to him, in case anything went wrong he could quickly go to them, (instead of going to different countries, remember that would take time, it says in the 7th book you have to be at a certain distance before you can apparate there).

the part of soul inside voldermort does not count as a horcrux as it has always been there dumbass.

He wished to split his soul into 7 pieces. Not make 7 horcruxes.
This means 6 horcruxes and the 7th segment of his soul is inside himself.
However, he unintentionally embedded a part of his soul into harry. Thus creating a 7th horcrux in which he never intended.
This both weakend him and created the connection between the two wizards.
