I'm the longest established reseller and I think I've seen most of the prices available (I keep records) over the last few years - they do vary a lot- even the same store can have different prices at different times for the same products.
My customers tell me that they have had reasonable luck buying from abroad, where prices are usually cheaper - especially if you happen on a store trying to buy market share. Although anything imported should be liable to duty if the value exceeds £18, a lot of suppliers try to help by putting a low value on the customs declaration.
It's worth asking them what they will put because, if you are unlucky enough to get charged, the carrier will also charge you to collect the money - Royal Mail charge around £4 collection fee when they come to the door to collect the customs duty. Most people who have tried it and told me what happened escape this charge.
Most manufacturers offer very limited warranty - R4 had a lot of problems with the internal card reader - fixed now in the main by the new reader in V2 (the one with the new shell) and so people ended up with unusable stuff the supplier would not take back.
A small but significant proportion of flashcarts go wrong - if the supplier will not conform to the European right that consumers have for two years warranty, you might end up throwing it away.
It's hard to establish the quality of the suppliers - even the ones that seem OK can suddenly stop and I have had a few reports of total loss of cash by unlucky buyers. I look at the street address - if they don't have one, that's not a good sign.
This forum is a great place to discover who is no good - word gets around quickly. Testimonials aren't worth much though. I used to ask people to post on another forum and got a lot of positive posts, but someone posted that it looked like a scam - too much praise!
It'd be good is there was more info around about which suppliers are worth your hard-earned cash - who needs the stress?
Prices at Xmas are usually higher than the rest of the year. The apparently cheaper suppliers often try to reclaim some profit on shipping charges. For those flascarts that need a sparate memory card they often charge too much too - it's often worth buying the memory separately as it's such a competitve market that you can find memory cards with free shipping.
Even though 1GB is plenty for almost everybody, your flashcart should last you up to ten years, so who knows what you'll need later on? As most game files are 32MB, you could get around 30 on a 1GB flashcart. There is a national shortage f 1GB Micro-SD cards at the moment though. Memory card prices fall all the time - the 4GB SDHC cards I sell are less than twice the price of the 2GBs today, because SDHC is relatively new, but after Xmas everything sub-4GB will be cheaper.
It's really hard to predict what will develop in the makret for these products - i used to think that the carts could not be improved further, but I was wrong. Like the guy in the sixties who said the world would only ever need 5 or 6 computers... Or the other one who said he couldn't see why anyone would ever need more than a tiny hard disk...
A good point about flashcarts is that they hold their value - you can often sell them for more than you paid - people seem prepared to buy from a non-trader they can get the truth from.
Almost all the UK sellers have been doing it for a while, so it's my guess that they are OK - compared to what you get for the money, it's great value however much you pay.
Amazon UK used to be the cheapest, but that seems to have stopped now. You do get what you pay for though.
Hi,
Bought mine from
http://www.model-gadget.com/shop/con...0229d17993c120
Watch out though having ordered the Micro SD card they didn't send it and continue to ignore my emails
The R4DS slots into the DS slot and no passcard is required - the microcard fits into the r4ds card itself.
This video will explain the box and contents:[Link removed by Tetlee, I'm unable to view the video to check content but noticed there is a disclaimer under the video screen asking for the link not be be given out directly
