I have just finished designing a bit of a sequel to Final Fantasy IV Advance. I have included full source code in c++ for the people who are curious.

You can run gba homebrew on ds I think..

Only if you can run it from slot-2 in some way. Either a full-fledged slot-2 device or the EZ-V 3in1 expansion pack will work.
