Nintendo continues 20 yr software domination in Japan.

That would be a more appropriate title.

In the U.S. and Europe you would be right. In Japan though Nintendo has controlled the majority of the software market since 1984.

If you are going to use the total number of consoles sold to determine who has the most market share then you need to add up all of the consoles that Nintendo was selling at the time. As an example on the first graph if you check the GB\GBC option you will see it was selling almost 3 to 1 vs the playstation.

The argument was about who had the largest market share, not who sold the most of x console. The other user is correct, nintendo has always dominated in this respect, and this is largely due to nintendo's domination in the handheld market.

The GB and its relatives sold something like 120+ million units in addition to whatever console nintendo had out be it the NES, SNES, or the n64. Nintendo has always dominated the video game market because of this.
