General games Chinese online gamer dies after three day stint

    via Joystiq

A 30-year old Chinese man from Guangzhou reportedly died from exhaustion at an internet cafe after a three-day online gaming marathon.

Details from the incident are mixed: the Associated Press reports that he was declared dead at the cafe, whereas Reuters claims he was rushed to the hospital after fainting. Neither report mentions what games the man was playing. The Chinese government this year imposed restrictions on the amount of online gaming for minors in the country.

Let this be a reminder to you, dear reader, to get out of your seat and go for a walk every now and then, make yourself something to eat, shower, nap, maybe even do some homework.

...3 days is nothing compared to another guy who died early on this year, the guy went almost 15 days.

Chinese gamer dies after 15-day session

    2 March 2007 08:26AM

Nothing else to do during Lunar New Year holiday...

An overweight 26 year-old man from north-eastern China has died after a ceaseless gaming session over the Lunar New Year holiday.

Chinese state media reported that Xu Yan, a local teacher from Jinzhou, in Liaoning province, collapsed on Saturday after spending almost 15 days playing online games.

According to his parents, Xu found the holiday boring as all the markets and other businesses were closed, leaving only the TV and computer as entertainment.

As vnunet.com reported last week, the Chinese government is very worried about the apparent problems with internet addiction among teenagers and young adults in the country.

Surveys released by state media suggest that 2.6 million, almost 14 percent, of teenage Internet users are classed as addicts.

The authorities have been introducing sweeping measures to help combat the problem.

These include banning teenagers from cyber-cafés, limiting online gaming sessions, and even boot camp-style military training, psychological counselling and electrocution.

Any game can become addicting(like SSBM) but that wont stop Jack Thopmson. If he saw a kid playing Sesame Street's ABC 123 Adventure and the kid repeated all the ABC forwards and backward he'd have the game banned for some dumb reason like" the game as sublime messages of death and chaos"
