Some people have already done interesting things with it.
I think it was mainly put there because it's easier to have present and think up a use later than to not have it and desire one later. Think of how consoles (pronounced 'nintendo') have all kinds of added ports that don't get used until years after the console is released.

DraconumPB is right, IR has no official use, i dont know why sony included it, it can probably be used as a remote for the ps3
Just wait - sony will have loads of juicy things planned uses for the IR port.
