So Rare can never use Donkey Kong, but what about Donkey Kong's family (as seen in Donkey Kong Land/Country) such as Diddy, Dixie and the others since Rare created those - or do Nintendo own them as they're characters tied in with Donkey Kong?

Huh....I'll bet Rare still has some standing with Donkey Kong, they couldn't have made a Donkey Kong game without owning some right to him.

As for his family, I don't really know...I'd guess they still belong to Nintendo, even though they first appeared in a RARE game(?)

Nintendo owns all the Donkey Kong games. Rare just made them (for Nintendo).

Another trivia aside: The Donkey Kong from DKC and DK 64 is not the Donkey Kong from the original Donkey Kong games, it is his grandson. "Crankey Kong" from the Rare DK titles is the "original" Donkey Kong.

Yeah, Cranky Kong mentioned something similar after you beat the game. I think it was also mentioned elsewhere, but I forgot where.

I also remember Sonic the Hedgehog's shoes appearing somewhere in Donkey Kong Country 2...
