Assuming you got your friends PSP to 1.5. (Which is VERY GOOD)
You can't update to 3.71 M33 directly from 1.5 though.
Okay, consider the 1.5 PSP homebrew capable...because it is.
If you haven't downgraded the 2.80 PSP do so here:
http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/downgrad...sed-49355.html
Before you go to 3.71 M33 you need to go to 3.52 M33. You can learn to do so here:
http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=2876
Then get Update 4 for 3.52 M33 here:
http://exophase.com/psp/psp-custom-f...eased-1756.htm
After you've installed 3.52 M33-4. You want to make a Pandora's Battery and memory stick with it. Learn to make one here:
http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/pandora-...psp-71985.html
Downgrade the 3.71 PSP with Pandora's Battery to 1.5.
Update the new 1.5 PSP to 2.71 with the official updater here:
http://dl.qj.net/Firmware-2.71-PSP/p...8046/catid/163
Then downgrade again to 1.5 using this downgrader:
http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/psp-downgraders-38119.html
(you'll have to get HEN-C for the downgrader to work: )

After reverting back to 1.5, update to 3.52 M33 using the method above.
Don't forget the M33-4 update.
This applies to both PSPs.
Start them in Recovery Mode.
Go to Configuration.
And put them both in the 3.52 kernel.
Now you can update them both to 3.71 M33.
On a side note:
I wouldn't recommend going to 3.71 M33 yet. It does not support the 1.5 kernel. Just stick with 3.52 M33. But it's your PSPs, do as you wish.
