General games DS hardware back on top in Japan

Nintendo's handheld is the best-selling hardware in Japan for the week ended October 7, overtaking Sony's PSP, according to data from Media Create.

Sales of the DS were up over 14,000 units to 87,535, while PSP sales dropped by almost 16,000 units to 86,895.

There's been less demand for Nintendo's Wii home console, with sales down by over 3000 units to 20,704 and the PlayStation 3 has also suffered with sales dropping to 10,446 units.

Reflecting Halo 3's drop in the software charts, sales of the Xbox 360 were at 1547, while the GameBoy Advance sold 242 units and the GameCube 109.

I don't get it. We ALWAYS see these amazing sales for the DS in Japan. There are SO many of them sold every week that with these numbers everyone in Japan must have at least 3 DS's by now. Seriously. So what's the deal. Do they just feel a need to own multiple ones, or do they break or what? How can they just continue selling so many each week in Japan when the numbers must account for way more than their population by this time?

    Japan — Population: 127,433,494 (July 2007 est.)

    DS sales around ~37-40 Million

According to that they still have good 90 or so million people without one
