cant get into Recov. Mode

I bought a PSP used from the local gamestore for $140
And everything runs fun except for the recovery mode, I hold down R when I start the PSP and other variations and still nothing D:
I dont think it's bricked or anything. Help?

Only custom firmware PSP's have recovery mode.
