    psp Skype bound for PSP

    via Computer and Video Games

Skype, a program that allows you to talk to people for free via the internet, is headed for the PSP, Sony has revealed.

The voice-over-IP client works a bit like MSN, but specialises in voice transfer; you build up a friends list or simply dial the number of the Skype account you want to contact, and it works like a phone from there on in.

Although Sony hasn't given it the whole press-release treatment, the revelation comes from an easily miss-able mention on their official site for the upcoming CES show.

"Call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances via Skype for PSP system," Sony states. Note, Sony expects you to talk trash - try having an intellectual conversation with gamers and the PSP will explode (maybe).

Expect specific details - tech specs and release - to come out of CES and related conferences, kicking off on Monday. We'll be there to cover it all, of course.

if this is a "voice-over-ip client", Could this mean that there would be no region restrictions as on everything they release in japan?

just would need to have a wireless internet connection (and the kit of course), that'll be great

The skype references have been in the PSP firmware for almost a year. It's good to see that Sony is finally going ahead with this.

dax found this out A LONG TIME AGO.
like I'm pretty sure it was found in firmware 2.6-2.7
there have been increasing numbers of plugin size and such refering to skype so us old homebrewers already knew about this.
its good that sony is finally anouncing it though

This is good news (finally confirmed). So long as Skype supports calls to land lines, I'll get it. Would be cool to make calls from my PSP and not chew up my phone's battery and minutes.

A lot of stuff has been discovered early in the PSP. If this particular feature does make it eventually, I think it'd be a great feature for the PSP firmware. It could possibly sell more PSP's also.

Meh I just bought a wifi phone about 6 months ago and use it as my home phone. It cost me $200.
Though the psp wont be as convient but it cant possibly be more unreliable.

If you watch the PSP video on the CES site then you'll see a girl plugging a phat PSP into her TV and playing a family guy clip on her TV.

Hint of phat TV output support?
