here is a version VBA 1.8 that is newer then 1.8b3 and contains a whole bunch of fixes. it doesn't have the optimisation that VBAM does since its based off the latest 1.8 svn.

Personally I stick with 1.7.2 for most things due to the very low CPU power required (useful when trying to run a GBA file as fast as possible). If I need more accurate emulation I use 1.8.0 or no$GBA.

It says VBAM is highly optimized, right? I'll give it a go and see how that works out.
