it said in the instruction manual not to expose it to high levels of heat.It was probably a hot day and the psp was still on the battery will blow up if you expose to heat.

nah.. its probably a short circuit that caused the inflation then explosion of the battery...
it happened to me before but did not explode...
i realized what was the cause... well i found 2 causes:
1.- radiation from phone or source...
2.- static electricity.

I gotta admit it's kinda funny, anyways the sony psp battery has a short protection built in. kinda leads me to think it was a third party one.
