i've been googling around for awhile but im not sure what method to do.

so i have a psp with 2.6 on it and i want to be able to everything on it(homebrew, isos, etc)

should i downgrade to 1.5 or go to custom firmware(dark_alex)

you need to downgrade to 1.50 in order to be able to install custom firmware

but first get the 2.80 downgrader, upgrade to 2.80, use the downgrader and you'll be on 1.50, from there you can go to custom firmware
