Default Nintendo 'fears for game industry'

The president of games giant Nintendo has said he fears for the future of the industry and has warned that it must innovate or die.

The DS was unveiled in Los Angeles
Satoru Iwata told BBC News Online that the industry had become obsessed with faster processors and better graphics.

He said unless things changed people "would get tired of games".

Mr Iwata was speaking after the launch of its new handheld console, the Nintendo DS.

The new machine, unusually, features two screens and games can be controlled by using a touch screen and voice recognition, as well as the conventional method of pressing buttons.

    'Beef up'

"We are concerned about the current direction of the industry," said Mr Iwata.

"Looking at the past 20 years, as long as we could beef up the processing power, as long as we could make computer graphics approach realism, then people were excited about the result.

Shut up Krowstrife, he has posted NEWS!!! in the NEWS forum! Whats wrong with that?

    You are the spammer here!

Anyway, I just reckon Nintendo are running scared because they can't keep up with the big boys.

There's only so many textures you can stick to Mario's ass!

If anyone remember my prophecy I predict another video game crash. *Eventually.

And, Nintendo is right. Games have become huge Hollywood productions. I can't believe alot of you play some of them because they are remote of "fun".

which game will be the next ET, Driver 3 crap enough.

thing is the market is a whole lot bigger now, so a complete flop would be a bit much.

i think sony is a bit at risk, releaseing PSP and ps3 might be a bit much, i don't think the market wants to move that fast, the ps1 still sells well and not too many people want to drop there new GBSPs so soon. sony are a risk of tring too much too soon
