Exophase (http://bitpack.net/) has just released his GBA emulator for the PSP, heres what he says:

gameplaySP (gpSP for short) is a GBA emulator written completely from scratch. It is still pretty young (only having started a 3 months ago)
and thus rather immature, but it does a decent job of playing a number of games. It is currently very minimalistic, in the sourcecode, presentation, and features. Its number one focus is to deliver a GBA
gaming experience in the most playable way that PSP can manage, with frills being secondary.

Having said that, optimization was the important way in achieving this goal, with overall compatability being a near second. Because of this
some games may not run at the favor of running more games significantly better. Of course, the compatability will improve with time.

Many games will run at their best out of the box, but some games will run very slowly unless idle loops are taken care of. There is a supplied
ROM database, game_config.txt, that gives idle loop targets and other settings that may help a game to run better (or at all) on a per-game basis. Currently (as of the first release) only a very small number of
games are entered. This number should improve dramatically over time.

gpSP currently requires an authentic GBA BIOS image file to run. It will make no effort to run without one present; this file is 16kb and should
be called gba_bios.bin and present in the same location as the EBOOT.PBP file. Please do not ask me where to obtain this, you'll have to look
online or grab it from a GBA. Note that it is not legal to have this file unless you own a GBA, and even then it's rather gray area.

-- Features --

gpSP mostly emulates the core Gameboy Advance system. As of right now it does not emulate any special hardware present on various GBA cartridges.

What it emulates:

GBA CPU: All ARM7TDMI ARM and Thumb mode opcodes except block memory w/ s-bit (probably aren't used in GBA games) Video: Modes 0, 1, 2 almost completely, basic 3-5 support, sprites,
windows/OBJ windows Interrupts: HBlank, VBlank, all timers, all DMA channels, keypad DMA: Immediate, HBlank, VBlank, sound timer triggered
Sound: Both DirectSound channels and all 4 GBC audio channels Input: Basic GBA input delivered through PSP controls Cartridges: Currently supports up to 16MB large ROMs (32MB will not load)
Backup: 32/64kb SRAM, 64kb flash, 512bit/8kb EEPROM

What it lacks:

Video: No mosaic, bitmap modes lack color effects (alpha, fades), there might be some minor inaccuracies in blending...Cycle accuracy: Very cycle innacurate; CPU is effectively very overclocked, meaning games with rampant idle loops will probably run very poorly. DMA transfers effectively happen for free (0 cycle). Please do NOT use gpSP as a first source for developing GBA homebrew,
try No$GBA instead.Backup: 128kb flash is not currently supported.

-- Controls --

The control scheme is very simple and currently can not be changed.

At the ROM selection screen:

Up/down: navigate current selection window.
Left/right: switch between file window and directory window. Circle/start: select current entry.
Square: go one directory up.

Download and Give Feedback/Compatibility Reports Via Comments

Many games including Mario are running at Full Speed and with sound, try your favourites out and report back as soon as possible

UPDATE: I've added a version for PSP v1.50 since some people were having trouble making their own

Crazy how a great emu can be released at any moment without warning lol. Well anyways great job and it seems that full speed GBA emulation is possible as long as it was made from scratch for psp. I hope something like this happens for a ps1 emu. Great job. Just curious, is there a limit on the size of the rom?

shadow77
August 20th, 2006, 08:54
insane.. GBA is roughly 2x the clock speed of the snes and yet tons of games I tested are working perfectly at 0 or 1 frameskip !!

AWESOME JOB !! :)

BelmontSlayer
August 20th, 2006, 08:56

Mourningstar
August 20th, 2006, 09:58
We need to list compatible games that are working damn near flawless...

Castlevania - Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow work perfectly!

What games have yall tried?

Mourningstar
August 20th, 2006, 10:01
Wario Ware Inc also works great, but the sound is a little messed up...

Damn, my PSP just crashed to the blue screen of death while playing WarioWare.

kando
August 20th, 2006, 10:01
-super mario world advance runnin pretty smooth

-super mario kart has flawless graphics and near flawless play.

kayhanbakid
August 20th, 2006, 10:03
wow!!!!

Super Mario Advance runs perfectly at frameskip1.
i think it runs a little better if you rename the rom SUPER MARIOA.gba.

my Mario Kart rom actually works better now on my PSP than on my NDS!

Super Mario Advance 2 always crashes for me in the same exact spot in the beginning and the sound was very scratchy while it ran.

Super Mario Advance 3 also crashes at the beginning with terrible sound.

Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga works nearly perfectly with 0 frameskip. (At least the beginning part that I saw). EDIT: actually it crashes before you enter the first practice battle against Bowser.

Pirates of the Caribbean actually runs really well. It doesn't even load on most GBA flash carts.

incredible emulator!!!!

Others:
Works pretty good-Spongebob Supersponge (Absolutely perfectly), Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo Revival (really slow), Star Wars Episode III (Slow but still somewhat enjoyable), Sonic Advance (perfect), Sonic Advance2 (Not as perfect but still really good), Sonic Advance3 (Also really good), Who Wants to Be a Millionaire 2nd Ed (no sound though, but that's ok, the sound is annoying)

Don't work or crash near beginning- Jackie Chan Adventures, Wario Land 4, Tetris Worlds, Chessmaster, Aladdin (same game works perfectly on SNES emu though)

All right, that's enough testing for me. My PSP just ran out of batteries and it's 3AM where I am. I'm going to sleep.

four_add
August 20th, 2006, 10:04
ive just tried dragon ballz adventure and summon night. both works!! i think all gba games work with this emu :) both at high speed frame rate.. much much better than pspvba IMO.

Mourningstar
August 20th, 2006, 10:06
Pokemon Fire Red works pretty good also....

So I would assume all the Pokemon games do...

teh21337
August 20th, 2006, 10:16
i dont get these bio roms xD

dOOmy
August 20th, 2006, 10:17
Pirates of the Carribean works great except for the sound which sucks, but oh well the action is nice.

psiko_scweek
August 20th, 2006, 10:20
ok the games ive tested thus far:

The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap -- 100% playable with a bit of some sound issues

Final Fantasy 1 and 2 Dawn of Souls - 100% playable with sound issues during the battles (horrible sounds!)

Castlevania: Aria of Shadows -- crashes while loading.

oh yeah did i mention ZELDA?!?!

ok now the gripes:

there is no in-game menu so you have to restart the emulator to swich games

the menu that IS there, need improvement

umm....thats basically it.

just think this basically proves that an emulator written from scratch for the system WILL be better than a port (its common sense but damn!!)

so c'mon PSmonkey where is our full-speed N64 :p

Mourningstar
August 20th, 2006, 10:25
2 in 1 Dr Mario & Puzzle League works great...

Final Fantasy IV Advance ssems to be working good, but has sound problems...

This is a VERY, VERY impressive release. Beta mostly because of its occasional crashes (even upon loading some, at other times compatible, roms), so it's a little inconsistent, but it feels Alpha for enough moments to be worth an immediate download. So happy, especially with "D8" impending. It has been a good week for the PSP.

I have added "Monster House" to the compatibility list if you are interested - it runs very well, with only a few problems with sound and graphics.

So far I am able to continue where I left of a year ago lol. So try loading some of your backed up .sav files and it will probably work.

GRRRRRRR, im going insane. i can't get it to work. heres what i did

i used seiPSP to make it run on 1.5, after that i got me BIOS file, renamed it to "gba_bios.bin" exactly, put it in my .PBP folder and everything else needed, made a ROM folder. anyway, it loades up, but gives me a screen telling me i dont have a bios file and whe i get one to re-name it, and have that long line of numbers on it..or somthing.

PLEASE HELP, I REALY REALY WANNA TRY THIS.

Try using another bios file (with right checksum = a860e8c0b6d573d191e4ec7db1b1e4f6)

I must say this is a very great emulator for the PSP. I'm playing Pokemon FireRed and the speed is almost 100%, i think its probally at about 90% in this game and sound is a bit choppy, but who needs sound anyway. I'm blown away at how good this works!

Oh, and honestly, all this emu needs now is a nice GUI and i think it could be out of what you call it "Beta" but this is beyond beta in my world.

Keep it up!

Hmmm... strange problem here. Had it working great about an hour or so, now all it does is start playing the GBA logo, then crashes to the blue screen... it appears other people have been having this problem too, but it seems strange to me that it would all of a sudden stop working.

August 20th, 2006, 16:01
I don't get it. Do the game file names have to be renamed like the entries in the config file?

Because Mario World and Castlevania - Aria of Sorror both crash into a bluescreen during the intro :(

And how can it be, so many games work for some people? The included config file just contains a few games.

Absolutely tremendous work! I had concluded that the CPS2 emulator would be the last major emulation breakthrough for the PSP, but I am greatly pleased to be proven wrong. For a first release it is better than could ever be expected, some roms don't work, but Sonic works very well. Looking forwards to fuller compatibility, zip support, and a richer menu.

I really need to get a 4Gb memory stick.

just rename it and DO ADD THE .bin part ;) sometimes that tends to confuse folks...lol..;)
just go to your 16 mb bios file ;) andright click and choose rename bro....then copy and paste this there ;)

gba_bios.bin

ALSO FOR EVERYONE ;) if you ALREADY HAVE A GBA EMU IN YOUR PSP

dont add ANOTHER roms folder...lol...just guiide yourself to the roms ALREADY ON THE MS VIA FILEBROWSER ;) hope that saves someone some space :D

You cant go to jail for talking about something thats illegal. Its everyones own choice weather they walk rather than talk. But people that have a GBA should worry. So I dont see why its a problem. If Wraggster or someone asks me to take it down, then I will take it down.

Maybe some of them dont.

Remember, the save has to be the real game sav, and not a save state from vba.

He added an awesome icon, background, and music that plays when you highlight the icon. Hold on, I'll take a screenshot.
I'm just gonna use Shadow's there WAY better. :)

I dont know if someone has mentioned this in this post but the best way to use this emu and test games is to kxploit it then use irshell to run it with app loading confirmation turned off then to change the rom all you do is exit emu to irshell then run it again. This is much much quicker then going back to xmb and reloading emu with gameboot delay!!!

I hope this release inspires people to remake some emulators from scratch for the PSP, eg: SNES. If this is an example of what can be achieved, we can have 100% speed for virtually every console!
I've tested Super Mario Advance, Wario Land 4, and Mario Kart and each one of them ran between 90-100% without a frameskip!! Wario Land crashed after I'd played through to the end of the 1st level of the green corridor, but it ran fine up til then. And if it really doesn't use the ME for sound emulation yet, we can expect a major increase in speed when he does code it.
Things I hope for for the next release:
ZIP support, ROM changer, Control rebinding.

Again, wonderful emulator, doubly so as it's still only a Beta!
