Figures this would be too easy...

Can anyone lend advice to fixing my problem, not that to install the controller or software but to make it work with my game.

The whole issue I'm having here is, windows recognizes and configures it (lights on or off the controller)...when I go to play say Fallout 3, it recognizes it and allows me to change button mapping to my liking. Yet when I go into actual gameplay the controller acts as its not functioning in any manor while my mouse and keyboard continue to do the work.

Now what Im trying to figure out here, is this setup primarily made for those using emulators and old school games? Or can this be used for new games like Fallout in this case? I consider myself to be pretty computer literate, but this one is baffling me. And unfortunately I dont have a older game to test (like a GTA ect). Can someone help? If so, Thanks in advance!

I am using Windows Vista and got the Sixaxis to work, but the red lights all still blink and pressing the PS button doesn't seem to do anything. I was able to get it to test in the Control Panel, and I did actually play the game Overlord with it!

The original way on the first thread of this post did not work for me at all. Anyway, I wrote up an article (http://www.brighthub.com/video-games/pc/articles/16035.aspx) showing both ways to do it if you want to check it out.

I wish Sony would make some official drivers! They'd sell more Sixaxis controllers if they did.

I have tried to follow all the directions but can't make it past the first download. When I click download to install the driver a screen opens up and I click open then another screen opens up and closes almost instantly, then the open, save, cancel screen comes back. I need some help. PPPPLLLEEEEAAAAAASSSSEEE

Will this mess up the controller in anyway? The control is my brothers, not mine. I'd like to do this so I can play Chrono Cross on an emulator. And I have the game, by the way, I just don't have a memory card or PS1 anymore.

Ahhh, finally!

I managed to get the PS3 controller working. It was a bit tricky, but this is what I did:

I originally installed a different version of libusb than the suggested one: 0.1.10.1

Each time I would uninstall and reinstall, it would keep the newer drivers. So what I ended up doing is:

1. uninstalling libusb
2. manually deleting the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\libusb0.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\libusb0.sys

3. installing libusb 0.1.10.1 from here (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/libusb-win32/libusb-win32-filter-bin-0.1.10.1.exe?modtime=1110398222&big_mirror=0).
4. let the test application run after installation, and make sure the DLL and Driver Version is 0.1.10.1
5. Plug in your PS3 controller
6. Run the ps3sixaxis_en.exe program
7. Press the PS3 button on the controller.
8. Repeat step 6-7 till the ps3sixaxis_en.exe says "found PLAYSTATION(R)3 SIXAXIS controller", at which point the controller should work in Control Panel -> Game Controllers -> PLAYSTATION(R)3 Controller -> Test

Hope this helps those that are banging their heads like I was!

OMG FINAALY! Thank you so much, I had tried everything from the first 12 pages, and nothing had worked till I tried this! I have Vista BTW on a labtop, so i didn't even expect it to work period. For a while it didn't work, but then when I opened command prompt (Start, accecories) is started working on the Game Controllers test. THANK YOU!:D

Works Fine, the only difference I noticed is that on my system all 4 lights keep blinking even while the controller works (windows receive the controller input )

Obviously I havn't read through all of this thread (52 pages) to see if anyone else was having this issue, but I think I can safely assume its widespread.

The dead zone on these controllers do not work for racing games. I've now tried a number of games with a number of controllers, and they always veer left, or right, or change between the two, when there is no input on the analogue sticks.

In your "Control panel - game controllers - properties - settings - calibrate" You can see (even after calibration) that the deadzone for each axis jumps from 49% to 51%.

In FPS games, this could be frustrating, but in RACING games, its the difference between winning, or getting pasted. I've searched on the net for ages now, and there is no fix for this, which is an incredible shame, because these controllers would be perfect for racing (in theory).

Also, the triggers are recognized as buttons. This means that no matter how much pressure is applied to the triggers, they will only register as "ON" or "OFF". Not sure if this is just XP not being able to assign another axis or two, but again, its incredibly frustrating.

Sad to say as it is, I almost don't see the point in trying to use these as controllers for PC games. When you are not moving either analogue stick, your computer will always think your gently nudging it it one direction or the other, all the time. I am yet to see any exceptions to this.

NOTE: This happens both with this release, and the newer dual shock three drivers. The controller is the issue, so I cannot see the sixaxis ever being an option for PC gaming.

Considering the amount of makeshift devices I've made from tearing appart stereo's and headphones, guitars, building computers, and being a total geek for a long time, I'm ashamed that I was thinking of buying an xbox controller off my friend I have a ps3 downstairs. NO idea how I overlooked this, especially considering I have a server program on my pc that runs through my wireless router to my PSP W-lan and acts as a joystick. Without the joysticks it's not great for ps2 though. I used to love it for snes and stuff though.

The time's have changed again, eh? Why do I suddenly feel elderly... ugh.

__________________________________________________ _________________
To anyone who's having trouble: I'm using windows XP sp2

Make sure you have the ps2 controller plugged into the USB port. It's not running on wireless (although it's possible if you have wireless internet).
Be sure to follow the steps in the right order. If you launch the files in the wrong sequence, go to your start menu and use the uninstall option and retry.

Also if you're still having trouble, I'd reccomend deleting the rar. or zip folder and download it again. extract it to a folder, but this time BEFORE you launch the installer, go to start> control panel then on the left switch from category view to classic view via the "switch to classic view". From there: Add hardware> and scan for added hardware. Your USB ports may not be picking up the ps2 controller because they're lame like that depending on your motherboard and so forth.

Also make sure you're following the steps precisely.

For those of you who are looking to skip to the end instead of reading through 50 pages of idiocy, I did it all for you. This guy fixed the problem 90% of people have within the first 10 pages. Do exactly as he says.

I don't think the older version of libusb is needed. The main problem is that you have to hold down the PS button and immediately after, you need to run the .exe file (not libusb, the other one). If it isn't working, it'll display "# busses found" before closing. If it does work, it'll say "# busses found, PlayStation controller etc etc found" before closing.

After the program has found your controller, you can go to game controllers -> test, hit the ps button a few times, and it should eventually pick up your controller's movements.

voila.

Well I made an account just to post here. It was working for my computer pre-f*ck-up (pre-f*ck-up is the stage in my computer life where I foolishly installed Ubuntu as another operating system then tried to get rid of it, ended up having to format my hard drive [windows was crashing on attempted start up,]) so I tried to get this to work just a minute ago, followed the instructions, etc., etc.. Windows (forgot to mention: Vista 32-bit, service pack 1) wasn't even making its usual beeps; tried to restart the computer, there is where it gets "fun", keyboard and mouse didn't work and the computer crashed within 15 seconds of windows log on. Had to grab the Ol' PS/2 keyboard and mouse, boot into safe mode, and delete lib-usb. Everything is working fine now, except the controller, back at square one. Any help?

Hey, first time poster.
for hockey2112: I've been using the USB. I don't know if the Bluetooth connection would work. But I will try it sometime.

Anyway, I also had a little bit of trouble while trying to install the controller and quickly made a tutorial for others.

Tar version:

Hey I just registered to post and say this is awesome.
Worked first time with me, and I'm playing through Super Mario Bros 3 again with it.
Only problem is I can't get it to work good with GTA3. the analogue sticks work to control the player, but none of the other button work :/.
Still, thanks so much :)

K, had the same problem, and this is what I did:
Plug the controller in, press PS button let Windows recognize it, etc.
Goto Device Manager and locate the controller under Human Interface Devices (I think), right click and uninstall.
Run the ps3 sixaxis util provided in this thread
In device manager right click on your computer name and click on scan for changes

This should pick up the controller again and you should be able to use the buttons :)
(well this worked for me anyway)

This worked perfect for me.

I am afraid that I must deem this driver completely and utterly useless to the fullest extent of it's massively failed capabilities.

Followed the instructions and have received as much response from the controller as I did when I tried plugging it in without a driver. Oh wait, that's right, that means none! And if I am getting no response, then this driver doesn't work... AT ALL.

So yeah, how in the bloody frelling hell do I get this god forsaken thing to work?

Is it supposed to close right after it opens then?

perhaps you're opening the wrong file after unzipping like I did.
There are three files being displayed and I kept opening "ps33sixaxis_en.exe" and that would have your command prompt problem. Instead I found the right file to open is "lib-usb".

Does not work on MacBook Pro with Boot Camp Win XP. Crashes when I try to install the libusb driver.

EDIT: I take that back. After trying a few times and shutting all of the background programs, the install went smooth. Connecting the controller, running the exe and pressing the PS button a few times did the trick. Just like it says on the instructions. Too bad we havent got the motion controls yet. Good Job!
if your using the macbook it's better to be running your windows XP or Vista in Parallels for it to work in the instilling PS3 controller the first time right.

Hi
I've tested many programs and drivers. For me the best is winds3. It's easy to install, easy to use and supports two dualshocks/sixaxis on one bluetooth. Works with Vista.

This is key feature description from winds3 website:
01. All-in-one program with no need for other software (ppjoy/libusb/joy2key...).
02. Supports 2 controllers simultaneously with 1 bluetooth adapter.

Yea I was confused myself about the little CMD prompt window disappearing in a second, but I just rolled wiht it, held the PS button, and for a second my mouse lost any and all function, but that came back, went to contorl panel, found my PS3 controller is now working fine like any other game pad!

Righteous.

Thank ye Muchly

03. Connects PS3 controller to a PC via wireless bluetooth adapter.
04. Acts as native gamepad (same axis/button mapping as X360 controller).
05. Can be used as a keyboard/mouse in any game by employing virtual keyboard/mouse drivers.
06. Supports all games on windows XP/Vista(32bit) when mapped as keyboard/mouse.
07. Supports up to 12 key mapping groups with fast switch function.
08. X/Y motion sensor supported.
09. Record gamepad operations while playing and replay them later as a macro.
10. Switch between original bluetooth driver and WinDS3 with one button click.
11. Shortcut keys supported while playing.
12. X360 controller emulator that fully supports rumble/vibration.

so does that mean i have to go and buy a bluetooth adapter? or does it work with the usb cable? ive been trying to find the answer for a while

Hello, i tried every single little thing that was posted here... nothing did the trick for me even though it showed that the wireless controller was connected to the pc the buttons didn't work and i only got the 4 flashing red lights so i went here http://www.motioninjoy.com/help/sixaxis-dualshock-3-connecting-bluetooth and downloaded those drivers and followed all the instructions. After i was done i restarted the pc and voila! the red light on the number 1 appeared and my control was hooked... took me about 7 hours of reading/downloading/ trying all the methods shown in here hope this helps. I never post but i was very grateful with whoever mentioned this website somewhere on the pages 50's
