To me, the psp-290 is good because it is supported by some psp games and very portable.
My experience of it with my non-TA-082 motherboard was not that good but after changing, it works perfectly and connection doesn't drop off. Hope this helps. Refer earlier posts for more info.
Okey, couse i got a nice price at the PSP-290 and i rather want that than some homemade device, couse it looks slim and cool. My PSP is a non-TA-082 i think couse it was fw 1.52 when i bought it a year ago. Why would that matter anyway? The GPS utility should be as functional on a new as an old motherboard?
I live in Sweden, Gothenburg, would it be problems connecting to sattelites?
How much time does it take to be up and running with the GPS, the search time i mean?
Any other things i should know?

I've got Sony's 3.03fw on my psp. My gps should be here from Japan any day....
I see there's a new downgrader out for 3.03 but I do not have an unlocked copy of GTA. Is there any way to go from 3.03fw to 3.03oe? Any other suggestions?
I have been waiting weeks for this thing and now that it's almost here I won't be able to use it!:(

Until now, there is no other way do Downgrade your PSP.
You MUST HAVE the unpatched GTA Liberty City Stories to downgrade. Maybe a Fried of you has the game?

You will need usbacc.prx and usbgps.prx for it to work.

ideas of where to get it:
-rent it from a movie/game store like blockbuster
-buy it from EB games or GameStop its only $20 new and there are still some floating around
-ebay (but those guys are assholes selling it for like 50+ dollars)
-borrow from a friend
-or do what i did, i live on campus at a university, i walked down the hall announcing that i needed to borrow the game and it was leant to me, it just so happened to be the unpatched GTA
should not be to hard to get a hold of... i still see the unpatched at my local gamestop.

download the original sony release of your custom firmware version (ie. get the 3.10 official sony eboot if you are running 310OEA), then use psar and pspbrew to dump all the prxs from the file then pick the 2 that you need at of the lot. it is better to do it this way you have the ones that havent been altered and are unique to your firmware.

To me, it does make a big difference in terms of getting a reception and maintaining one but both are functional. Like deniska has mentioned, this could be due to the newer design that gives more power to the usb. It should take between 2-5mins to get a reception from my experience, depending on weather conditions. I am in Aust. Don't think there will be much issues in Sweden.
More info is available if you search up the threads.

I'm having major problems with the prx files. I put them in the properly named folder in the root of my mem stick, so that's right, and I've tried the 2.71, 3.00, 3.03, 3.10, and 3.11 usbacc.prx files and I always get the same usb accessory module error. What could be wrong?

I have a serial GPS, so i used the correct eboot and it tells me that the game can not be started.
But with the 290 gameboot it would start correctly, just not track sats obviously...
What version do I need?
Can somebody post the entire thing back up, not just the eboot for the version.
Maybe thats my problem.

@Russoxley187
The 0.48 release is only for GPS290 so will not work with your serial GPS.
To get it working with 0.47 do the following:
First install the latest 0.46 for serial GPS(you can find the link for this in my FAQ in deniskas discussion forum). Then you have to be sure you use the correct EBOOT.PBP. In the package for 0.47 there are two EBOOT.PBPs, one for GPSSlim and one for PSP290.
You need the one for GPSSlim its size is 701KB in windows explorer (the size of the GPSSlim EBOOT.PBP is 796KB). Put this EBOOT.PBP in the mapviewer folder and leave the original EBOOT.PBP in the mapviewer% folder.
This way it works for me with holux gpsslim236 and 3.03oe-c firmware

what Directory have you set to use homebrew in recovery mode?
if you set it to 1.5 the use the folder ms0:/PSP/GAME
if you set it to 3.03 then use ms0:/PSP/GAME303
and maybe the prx need enabling in recoverymode but I'm not really sure about this.

GiUd@, how did you get the prx files?
The best way is to use PSAR Dumper and hit O (circle) when prompted.
Depending on your firmware, create a new folder.
Firmware 3.03OE (any variation)
- Create GAME303 in your PSP directory, this is where you'll put mapViewer folder
Firmware 3.10OE (any variation)
- Create GAME310 in your PSP directory, this is where you'll put mapViewer folder
From my experience, as long as you put the mapViewer folder in GAME303 (or GAME310) it doesnt matter what you set in Recovery Mode, which applies to the "GAME" folder.
Next, try with 2.71 prx files, put them in the mapViewer folder.
Also, did you replace the prx's in the flash0:\ with the original files? I hope you'd backup those files before messing them up.

I#ve just been playing around quite a while and finally managed to get the 0.48 release to work on my 3.03oe-c firmware.
I used the prx from original 3.03 firmware and dumped them without the sigcheck.
I put everything into ms0:/PSP/GAME
so directory structure now looks like this:
ms0:/
/PSP
/GAME
/mapviewer (here I put the prx)
/maps
/system
Then in recoverymode I set Game Folder For Homebrew to 3.03 Kernel.
Oh yes and don`t forget to set FAKEFEED=1 in the config file
ms0:/PSP/GAME/mapviewer/system/config.txt

shut down your psp completely and then hold the right shoulder button while booting then you will end up in the recovery menu of the firmware. Here you have to highlight Configuration-> and hit x
here you can set the Game Folder for Homebrew.
If it is set to 1.50 kernel just hit x and it will change to 3.03 Kernel go back and exit recovery mode.
Hope it works for you.

hi folks!
yesterday is created a map with ne newest version of gmdl and it seems that map this! runs quite unstable.
i don´t know if it´s the program itself or the maps that makes my psp crash. the app is installed in game310 and works well if zoomlevel keeps untouched. but when i zoom in or out, move the map around map this! sometimes chrashes.
is there a solution?
------
why doesn´t map this! calculate my position wuth only 3 or 4 sattelites? isn´t a trigonometric calculation possible with 3 sattelites (minimum)?
--------
how can i force the receiver to work faster?
sometimes it needs 5 minutes to get position data when starting the app and having 8 sattelites available all the time? from the moment on it is working its doing the job very well.
---------
is the speed displayed in mp/h?
and if yes - how can i switch to metric system to have it shown in km/h?
same problem with hight... (attitude)
sorry 4 my bad english, but i hope you can help me. i really love this application - it´s amazing!
maybe someone here knows where to find a german tutorial.

@the_ace, i assume that you're using the PSP290. what version of the prx's are you using?
i think it's up to the GPS receiver to calculate the geographical coordinates and send them to the PSP/Map This!.
Have you check the config.txt? There're some settings in there that can affect the performance of your PSP290, ie. INITLOCATION.
Check config.txt on whether a conversion factor is used to compute speed and altitude. I believe the "1" factor is associated with knots and meter, respectively.

I just made a small route in my home town in Germany: This is what worked for me:
1.Start gmdl
2. Open directions
3. Activate map24 ,local.live or google
4. Choose apropriate site i.e de. maps.google.de for Germany
(map24 did not work for me)
5. Enter Starting point:
PLZ(Zipcode) Strasse(street)
e.g. 76726 An Deroy 21
6. Enter Ending point
PLZ(Zipcode) Strasse(street)
e.g. 76726 reduitstrasse1
7. Click on „Route Berechnen“ (calculate route)
you may skip this step but then you won`t see the calculated route in gmdl
8. Once route has been calculated click Button „Get Values“
9. Activate the „create intermittant“ function and leave the default value, otherwise you will only have the most important waypoints in your map and it won’t look like an outlined route from start to end.
9. Click Button List
10. enter a name for the route
makesure it starts with _ i.e. _myfirstroute
11. click Button „Save POI“
12. copy generated file to the mapfolder you are using
You will find the generated file in the same folder as the „Google Maps Download.exe“

Getting PRX files:
What you'll need -
1. PBP Unpacker - http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/97
2. SONY Official Firmwares - http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/36
3. PSAR Dumpers - http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/38
What you need to do -
1. Download and install PBP Unpacker.
2. Download Sony firmwares (2.71, 3.03, 3.10)
3. Open the firmwares in PBP Unpacker, extract just the DATA.PSAR (right-click on it, select extract)
4. Download PSAR Dumpers, make sure you're using the correct version with respect to the firmware version
5. Put the PSAR Dumper (do this one version at a time) on your MemoryStick Pro Duo (MSPD)
6. Put DATA.PSAR in ms0:\ (root folder for the MSPD)
7. Run PSAR Dumper (same way as running MapThis)
8. When prompted, press the "O" button (dump WITHOUT sigcheck), THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!
9. Once finished, exit program and connect to PC, move the flash0 or f0 folder from MSPD to PC.
10. Find usbacc.prx and usbgps.prx in flash0\kd\ folder (or f0\kd\ folder), copy them to a new folder, name the folder with firmware version number.
11. Repeat step 3 through 10 with other firmware if needed.
PRX files go into your mapViewer folder NOT seplugins or flash0.

thanks for this great tutorial.
i have fw 3.10' on my psp, so yesterday i changed to MapThis! 4.7 and it works MUCH better with my old prx. i tried for about 30 minutes, zoomed like mad - it didn't crash.
the psp-290 is a little bit weak in getting position data through my car window. sometimes its loosing connection but it works quite well.
i´d buy a holux too, just 4 the car. but then i cant use my psp with itrip.
has anybody tried an mp3-plugin to hear musik while navigating with psp-290?
i don´t know if the mp3-plugin can be controlled by the remote control cable.
has anybody experiences with that?
i will make tests under different conditions and report the results here.
i´ve been testing hybrid maps yesterday - those are very nice!
unfortunately in my area they are not available at google maps. hope google will update their maps soon^^.
btw: i didn´t buy the psp-290 in a shop, because i heared of problems getting them.
so i tried ebay and got one from japan in only one week. this was pretty expensive (about 90€) but now i´m a lucky owner of such a device^^.

there is weak infrastucture and only few people living in a large area. so google didn´t mind taking detailled picures of this part of the world ;-)
maybe i can find some better pictures anywhere i still don´t have the knowledge to implement them in map this! or gmdl^^

Hi, I just got my GPS290 yesterday. I had some trouble with it when i got home last night and posted it in the wrong section.
So today is an ideal day to test it out again. I live near the border of Queens/L.I., so there's not so much interference from building and etc. I have a perfectly clear view of the sky, its sunny out now and no clouds. Today i got better result.. once i turn on GPS mode i found 1 sat and came back around 3 mins later i have found 6 sat plus 3, 4 others that kept dropping back and forth. But it did take me 22:05 mins to lock onto 4 satellites. Took longer than i expected.. So when i got a lock i walk around my balacony.. the cursor started to move, it went 20 block from where i was then a min later it got back to my current position (hovering tho, not on a still position).. Might be the signal... i only get 1/6.. sometimes i get negative ALT too..
Wondering if anyone can tell me what to tweak to get a better connection... I'm running on 3.03 OE-C and MapThis! v48.
Thanks in advance. Keep up the good work deniska!

Update on my GPS290..
After running MapThis! for almost an hour I decided to restart the program. This time the Satellite lock on is much faster less than a minute. Maybe because it already has the Satellite on record, so it doesnt have to search for it again. I also get a 5/6 signal. :D

Hi everybody.
I'm in the same situation as you, the _ace.
I have 3.0.3OE-C with usbacc.prx from 2.71 and usbgps.prx from 3.03. The GPS is the PSP-290.
With 0.47 it takes between 7-15 minutes to fix satellites and with 0.48 only detects 1-2 satellites in the same place and don´t fix never.
I have tried everything except changing the initlocaton, because if i put 2 instead of 1, maybe it will never fix a satellite.
Which is the best configuration to work with my firm?.
Thanks.

great work but i wonder when it will be available to make routes?? in my psp it takes about 2 min to work fine (i live in the out-skirts of madrid) so i'm happy ^_^ i think that with routes and a simple voice telling you either to go right or left it'll be perfect!! I encourage you to continue on your fabulous work!!

Your receiver seems to be busted... I don't see time runningg on those pics... does it work with Maplus software? (there is a gps info screen there that should work at any location too)

no luck... so i contacted the seller and he agreed to exchange the item so hopefully it was just a defect in that one unit, i have had it for less than 2 days and haven't dropped it or done anything of the sort that would break it.
before i send it off could there be any other explanation, i mean i tried it with several different softwares and it said everything was "ok" down the list for the green program and nothing happens. so based on those pictures i posted it would more than likely be the receiver?

Hey..i had the same problem as you until I realised that the problem was that my downgraded ta082 psp had a corrupted idstorage (whatever that is.. ;) ). This will cause your psp290 to never turn on. Anyway....search through this forum cos I remember someone posting idstorage changer prog...but you'll need a non ta082 psp..or a ta082 with a fixed idstorage to fix it. I hope this helps.. :-)

Bad flash or something? Anyways, I been fooling around with my rco and prx files in my flash.. Changing battery icons, wave patterns, volume bars, busy signals.. I just downgraded to 3.03 OE-C and gonna try MapThis! with my same configurations..

My guess is your ta082 was downgraded using the latest fw2.80 downgrader by team noobz which had an idstorage changer built into it. The previous ta082 downgrader by Dark Alex didn't have this feature...that's why the psp's downgraded using it had the corrupt idstorage. It didn't affect the psp in any way in terms of playing games, homebrew and the likes....just affect the way the psp interacts with devices connected through the usb port...like...when trying to play iso's on a pc's hard drive using usbhost..or using the psp290. I hope this info helps...I'm no expert but this is was I got to learn surfing through the net.. :D

hey guys, this might be a little off topic. But do you guys know where to get a PSP290 friendly carmount?
I found one at ebay that looks alright, http://cgi.ebay.com/BRAND-NEW-ARKON-VG935-PSP-Windshield-Console-Mount_W0QQitemZ180079378766QQihZ008QQcategoryZ1225 16QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
but at the top where the USB is, theres a plate that covers it. I'm assuming so the PSP wouldn't fall down and im not sure if it can fit the 290 on it.

The PSP290 unit also isn't designed to work in temperatures below 4 degrees Celsius. Sometimes I find that my gps unit will stop tracking my movement. Then I place my hand on the back of it to warm it up and it will start working again.
If the temperature is below zero you might also make sure that the PSP290 is warm enough to function.

the directions are pretty easy to follow, they are in the readme file of the USBHOSTFS fix file that was posted the other day... not too hard. its just that the chances of someone having the same situation of firmware 2.71 and MOBO ta-082 then downgrade to 1.5 isnt as common as i thought... and the idstorage corruption only seems to appear under that circumstance - rarely .. and it has an enormous affect on if the gps works or not.

it doesnt take long at all to find the sattelites... its just the stability of this mapthis software that is sometimes a problem. it freezes up often. i would say standing out side (clear view of all the sky) would find 10 satellites and fix on 5 or so... all between 3-5 mins

Just wanted to let people know that MapThis also works with other GPS receiver in addition to the PSP290. If you will be using the PSP & GPS receiver only for GPS purpose and not for games, you might want to check out the Holux GPSlim 236 or GPSlim 240 before purchasing the PSP290. See if your local GPS receiver retailer have them. For these 'generic' GPS receiver, you'll also need a special cable that can be home-made or purchased from the internet.

My setup is not working as it should:
I have a PSP-290, with firmware 3.10OE-A'
I used the green proggie with the supplied 2.71 prx files, works perfectly. Finds 5 sattelites.
If i launch Mapthis 0.461S it works too (with a map made by GMDL 0.48b).
Updated to 0.48, works with loading the map (finally !!, make sure the map is fine !)
0.48 is still buggy, random chrashes occur !
But, the signal strenght meter isn't working. It stays at 0 blocks.
Also, i can't get a fixed signal.

Fakefeed was always 0.
GPS state = off, but now the program hangs if i zoom in (common problem)
I will try again as soon as i will make a larger trip with our car, because i didn't get a sat fix.

WOOOW, i made a large trip about 2 hours ago, and mapthis worked  GPS is soo nice :) Handy if it's very dark and rainy outside.
I experienced a LOT of difference between the green proggie and Mapthis 0.47 !
My final working setup:
PSP 3.10OE-A'
No ta-082
Mapthis 0.47 (0.48 chrashes too much)
GMDL 0.49B
Prx files from 2.71 (supllied with green proggie)
Sattelite finding takes a LOT of time, my neighbour laughed at me  because his little tomtom one was setup in only a minute, and my PSP-290 antenna didn't work for the first FIVE minutes  because it did get 4 or 5 sattelites within the first 2 minutes, but it didn't get a fix !!
After 5 minutes you have 3 or 4 fixes.
I drove around almost 2 hours ;) and my experiences is that the money on the psp-290 are well spend, compared to a 499 euro tomtom.
BUT, sat fixing needs to be 300% quicker, and accuracy is not always good. For example, i drove up an intersection of 4 roads, and the map shows im 80 meters in front of it.
The difference between you and the map is (according to signal strength) between 20 and 80 meters.
Too bad there is no geodata for the Netherlands.
A few words of advice to Deniska and/or Mi52:
-Make scrolling under GPS mode possible
-Speed is displaying in miles ? In green proggie it displays in Km/h ?
-I finally found the bug that is (85% of the time) chrashing Mapthis (versions 41 to 48):
If you havn't downloaded all zoom levels, and zoom in at a zoom level where is no data to display, you psp freezes and shuts off. And yes i have the correct file blank.png from release 0.47
For now i'm going to sleep, this weekend i will try to make some POI's and routes :) . (Why are petrol stations not visible  )
And also try some prx files from Versions 3.03 and 3.10, see if that matters.

Codas,
thank you for your report and time spent testing the program.
Here is some answers/coments to your questions and observations:
-satellite aquisition: I am getting mixed results myself (not only with MapThis but official Maplus too).. I blame it mostly to PSP-290 inferior sencitivity. You may speed up the "warm up" time by playing with the INITLOCATION parameter in config.txt . "1" seems to work the best for me..
-presision: this could be because of weak signal (HDOP value is >4) or vendor mapping errors (yes google, msn, yahoo are not always provide good mapping data!!!)...
You should be able to display speed and distances in KM/h and KM (check out config.txt)
-I am looking in to patching the crashes in psp-290 version (it is marked as beta, so use at your own risk)
JoQ

Codaz, thanks for the tip, i aint got my PSP-290 yet but i changed version from 0.48 to 0.47 and the 2.71 prx, now it's working much better than before, no crashes yet! :)
Codaz
March 1st, 2007, 14:04
Yup, now my initlocation is set to 0, ZSC tipped me that.
But i'm going to change it to 1.
I forgot to mention: my psp-290 is a japan import, from ebay.
But deniska i don't think there is a difference between your play-asia model and mine.
I didn't knew what HDOP value was, but it was between 1.4 and 6 So yes that isn't good.
What very strange is is that if mapthis chrashes, and then you hard reboot the psp, load mapthis, load the map, then it will find the sat locations within 20 seconds :O
Like if they are still stored in the antenna or something.
I noticed that the antenna gets a bit warmer than if turned off.
Battery life is very good, you have almost 5 hours, with a full standard psp battery.
Maybe i will buy a 3200mah, or a car charger.
JoQ

Is there any possiblity that sometime in the future you will add support for Swedish characters åäö (ÅÄÖ)?

Different PSP versions may have different "noise" levels, depending on particular unit and/or manufacturer..
PSP's internal circuitry emmits electromagnetic noise which may affect the reception of GPS signal.
In my tests with HOLUX GPSlim 240 recever I would "loose" 1-2 satellites whenever I move the recever close to PSP's USB port (same position PSP-290 would be if connected).
It would be interesting to see if PSP-290 exibits the same behavior. Perhaps someone could create extension cable for PSP-290 unit?

But, the signal strenght meter isn't working. It stays at 0. I am holding it in my car and drive though the city. tryed 3 different days and different weathers. But the signal strenght meter still remain 0.
I am in Vancouver B.C Canada. If some one live the same place like me, Please help to find the problem. Thanks a lot.

hey deniska i just received my psp-290 and it works great im running on ta-82 mobo 3.03 oe-c with usb prx from maplus and the usbacc from the greenprog, the only the thing sometimes it takes a while to get a fix maybe 10 mins or less. When i get under a train or a small tunnel it loses connection for a sec but then it revives. I live in queens, NY btw. Question, will you're application have some sort of navigation intergraded into it anytime soon? maybe some highlighting of the road? calculating routes and what not. Thnx for the app.

You should be able to import a pre-defined route from google/yahoo directions with GMDL tool.
Once imported it will be marked with a red line, and announce waypoint instractions (turn left/right/etc)
No route recalculation so far...

Do you get any satellites to display on GPS-info screen? Is the gps clock running on the same screen? Is the GPS STATE "ON"? -if not your device maybe not functioning properly.
If you get some satellites to show up - try not to move the receiver for a few minutes - it will have better chance of "locking" on satellites .
Also, folks with newer motherboards may need to apply a patch to make the GPS thing working... read through this thread for details..

sorry for the improper question.. however i read (and study) how to do it so i just would like to know:
i have a psp ta-082 and i replace the bin file.. so now it check my psp-290 and it seems to works...
however the signal is really light... i mean... into my car i can't fix any satellite... outside yes... but it's not so good anyway.. max 3 level...
update:
ok i study basically all the 60 thread page....
i use custom 3.03 oec
mapthis 0.48
prx files from 3.03 sony
i live in italy
i just reach 3/4 satellite... and i fix connection only outside car..
the signal level maximun peak is 3... usually is 2 outside car... 1 in the car..
inside car i lose connection usually... but i'm able to reconnect soon..
gps is psp-290
tomorrow i buy a usb small male/male cable that i would like to test deniska though of keep antenna as far away asa possible from psp
however cvongratulations for the great work... maybe there's a way to use the psp-290 in a better way.... maybe is a sony toy....

i must admit i try the usbgps.prx from Maplus and the improvement is really high!!
i try to put the usbacc.prx from 3.10 but it gives me error when i try to launch mapthis... probably it depends in the fact i have 3.03 oeC
i still waiting the usb adpater that let me to use the PSP-290 not attached directly to PSP but a little away to see if psp gives "noise" to psp-290 satellite reception

hmm the thing with the predefined routes from GMDL.
Works good.
But Sometimes a part of the route (the last part) is missing.
can someone tell me why?
deniska
March 10th, 2007, 17:30
Mapthis can display only upto 400 waypints at a time.. so if your route is longer than that - it would display only the 400 closest points...
Anyway, this will be fixed in the upcoming version..

Sorry deniska I am just getting serious about buying a Sony GPS unit and I have a couple of questions about MapThis. First off let me say that I used it a couple of months ago and it was outstanding. That being said, I haven't used it in a while and using it with a GPS unit would be completely different. I see that there are many outstanding features and it is almost as good as a commercial GPS unit from Garmin. If you don't mind me asking what is on your to-do list and what is missing from this program as of right now? I am also trying to get a sense of how easy this will be to use, whether my mom or brother pick it up and know how to do it, and if I actually want to buy the GPS unit for this.

I can answer to some of the question as I am using it right now. The most important thing missing is the route calculator, so for now you have to use an external program on your computer to create waypoints and put it on your PSP.
But there is one great thing which just appeared, is the geodata map. you can put this file on your psp and type in some address and it ll show you exactly where the address is located.
One other thing which is missing is the audio system, like which would say direction. deniska spoke about that in this thread:
Of course you could wire it to external speakers, fm transmitter, etc... it's just a bit more complicated.. many people complained that even the existing (rather simple) cable was too hard to make...
I'll probably add basic sound (read beeps, etc) in a near future...not the highest priority though...
And for your mom/brother, the program is quite easy to use, has some pretty icons, but it's a PSP, so there are some function (like typing an address) which will be for sure not as good as a real GPS.
That said, I don't regret buying my holux. It might be the best thing for my PSP. nice job deniska

I hope deniska will rescue me on those problems:
1. I'm running Map This! 0.461s on 3.10OE-A', and I have PSP-290 attached, after loading the maps, it seems never receive any signal from satellites(of course I put two required .prx files in "mapviewer" folder and pressed square key to make the GPS mode ON), the singal bar is aways red. I installed PSP-290 TEST, and it shows my gps works fine(press cross key make gps activated, it shows me several satellites). I tried at least 50 time at different area, in my car, the open air...but still no luck in Map This!.why? What should I do?
2. Sometime(more than 80%) my PSP will shut down itself when it's loading the map or I made the zoom in(after sucessfully load the map), so I tried Map This! 0.47(for PSP-290) and 0.48, same problems, is this normal? Is there any settings I should change in 3.10OE-A' Recovery Mode?(BTW, my PSP is PSP1000, the first release version from Japan, and using 2G genuine Sandisk memory stick.Does this issue only happen on this original motherboard?)
3. I live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (Greater Toronto Area), what variable should I use for "INITLOCATION"?(PSP-290 TEST shows me location = -1)
4. Thank you for all your wonderful work.

But they don't deliver to Europe.
Deniska, the following bugs are noticed by me:
-Poi line isn't showed in directions mode of mapthis 0.47 (only the red circles)
-I added 5000 Gas stations into a poi. They aren't showed properly, only if i add another poi in Mapthis with START > ADD POI.
Then they poi's are displayed, but only as blue dots, not as gas icons (i selected gas.png in GMDL and applied to all).
-Directions are very often given too late, but thats maybe a GMDL question. For example, if i must take the exit on the highway, the poi is given ON the exit, not in front of it.
And my expierence is that making the map images smaller costs a LOT of time, i resized almost 22000 (!!) images yesterday, took me an hour to complete.
Need more experience and another program which recreates map structure (like 64x - 000 - etc)

PSP-290 dumps GPS data in binary format (not NMEA)
jhlee, both MapThis and GPS-290 test program use the same code to get satellite data... so it might be just your luck.. get Maplus and see if you get better reception with it (in gps info screen)

You can update TIMEZONE variable in config.txt

but you still be 30 minutes off...

I would like to know if map this gives turn by turn directions when going from Point A to Point B? I have it running on my PSP, but I only get a straight line from Point A to Point B. Thanks for your help.
i looked around and found this...
Creating point to point routes with GMDL
1.Start gmdl
2. Open directions
3. Activate local.live, google or yahoo
4. Choose appropriate site i.e de.maps.google.de for Germany
(map24 is disabled at the moment)
5. Enter Starting point:
PLZ(Zipcode) Strasse(street)
e.g. 76726 An Deroy 22
6. Enter Ending point
PLZ(Zipcode) Strasse(street)
e.g. 76726 reduitstrasse1
7. Click on „Route Berechnen“ (calculate route)
you may skip this step but then you won`t see the calculated route in gmdl
8. Once route has been calculated click Button „Get Values“
9. Activate the „create intermittant“ function and leave the default value, otherwise you will only have the most important waypoints in your map and it won’t look like an outlined route from start to end.
9. Click Button List
10. enter a name for the route
makesure it starts with _ i.e. _myfirstroute
11. click Button „Save POI“
12. copy generated file to the mapfolder you are using
You will find the generated file in the same folder as the „Google Maps Download.exe

Hi. I´m from germany and I´ve got a problem with Map This and the psp290. I hope someone could help me...
Description:
-I´ve got fw oe 3.03c
-Psp290-test shows: first points are ok
/ fixed on 00 satelites
/Ini.Location:00
/Gps State 3 Location: 0
I´ve tested MapThis0461Sbeta and the 047 versions, with different .prx-files. The edit maps I use gm0.4.13b. That´s all no problem, the maps are working, but it seems that it doesn´t find a signal. Nothing happens...
Greetz from germany
i had your same problems, and i resolved it by using 3.03 prxs instead of 2.71
copy 3.03's usbacc.prx and usbgps.prx and try again

îf GPS state is OFF, try to enable it with pressing the
[ ] Button on your PSP.
If you use the Analogstick, ist would be disabled.
So press the Square Button and then look into GPS Info Screen

not sure what part of europe you are in but why not try amazon.com?
they have germany, UK, and France sites so maybe they can get it to you.. looks like they got the 236 starting at $72 and the 240 at $80
personally i have the 240 and love it.. it's soooooo tiny... smaller than a BIC lighter... (a little thicker though)

Would be great, if this would be supported ;)

There is route calculation feature in the program for the reasons, which were explained many times in this forum. You can still import a route, generated with gmdl tool (provided that either google/msn/yahoo support directions for your area...)
Scan gmdl tool thread for details..

I can look in to unicode support.. but it would be tough to do text entry in all those languages outthere... currently danzeff OSK only supports latin character entry... so searches in different languages (as well as sorting of results) may be hard to implement...
Internationalization is a big project.. perhaps someone with good PSP coding background is willing to help? ;-)

But now the map area seems to be bigger then the map? So I made a new one. Does the same thing.

Like I said its probly been covered, but is there a way to fix this.... Thanks

Im not sure if you have answered this already or not, so i'm going to bother you just in case... ;)
I know the memory is pretty limited already in the psp, but would it be possible to have a "wardriving" application running in the background during mapThis so when you are near an access point it will show as a POI on the map? I have been working with the sdk trying to develop a similar application but am at the very starting point. I am wondering if you have thought about this and whether it may be on the to-do list or not. Thanks for your time in answering this

This should be an easy thing to implement, provided that you know how to detect hotspots using PSPSDK API...
MapThis provides API for quering current gps coordinates as well as adding a new POI, so the coding should be farely straight forward... but..
not sure if this "feature" should be implemented in mapthis.. perhaps, it would make sence to make it as a separate application. You can add this to my "green-screen" proggies and have them to generate the POI file for later import in mapThis...

The map this program when finally recieve the signal says that the logitude is 348.something, and the program warns me that I am out of range
I have no idea where to find the usbgps.prx form the maplus software as is said in the readme so i use the 2.71 file, finally I have 3.02OE installed but i don't think that is the problem. I someone can tell me where to find that dam prx I'll be very happy.

Hi deniska.
I have been working with the samples from the psp sdk to understand the functions for scanning for hotspots on-the-fly.
There was one other wifi sniffing program called "wifi sniffer" by jylam but he never released the source. So I looked into the sdk which provided the samples which were easy to understand and use.
I will look into the green screen program source to see how to query gps coords and perhaps add them to the project that i am currently working on.
What i am looking to do is release several "versions":
a) VSH PRX (for XMB):
-Log hotspots to POI file.
-Simple "hotspot radar" using gps scanning to show real-time hotspot locations on-screen.
-Hotspot information color coded
--protected: square
--unprotected: circle
--strong signal: green
--ok signal: yellow
--weak signal: red
b) EBOOT Application:
-Wifi hotspot POI file management
-Enhanced "hotspot radar" using gps scanning to show real-time hotspot locations
-Hotspot information displayed including strength, protection, SSID, etc.
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2213/mockupln2.png
(mockup)
c) Incorporate directly into mapThis:
If wifi scan is enabled, it will display new wireless points in real-time on the map.
The idea is to use the change in signal strength, the direction travelling, and the speed from GPS to approximate the location of wireless hotspots and display them on the map.
Then if certain criteria specified by the user are met, it will add the hotspot to the list of permanent POIs to display.
For example, user can configure to add hotspots if signal strength is weak (25%), ok (50%), strong (75%), or if hotspot is protected/not protected. etc.
By displaying the hotspot approximation "real-time" on the map, it will be easier to navigate closer to the hotspot: resulting in better signals and POI gps coordinates.
If you would like, I can create a post in the new code submissions, and post the basic structure needed to load the network modules, scan for access points, and print the information to the screen. I'm not sure i would be able to implement it into mapThis to do a test build though, and i would probably need help figuring out how to do the approximation formulas.
whew!
sorry for the length of this post, please let me know your thoughts!

califrag and deniska, just my 2 cents: i think that claifrag's idea would be a great thing to add on to MapThis!. i was just looking into purchasing one of those wifi key chain meters that shows you how strong ssid is in the area, but it was 20 dollars and sure as hell doesn't tell you which direction to go for a stronger signal. the concept you have is very good. you will be able to see the location of the hotspot relative to your gps coordinates. very intriguing, and very complicated

March 31st, 2007, 05:49
taspankya, in the meantime i suggest you visit jylam's webpage:
http://jylam.info/psp/
you can download his v0.2 of wifi sniffer which will turn your psp into the wifi key chain meter... with a little bit more info.. it doesn't exactly tell you where to go, but will tell you how many access points are available, if any.

Use 3.xx prx files... I believe the FAQ in discussion has info on how to extract them...
2.71 usbgps.prx has a bug displaying negative lat/lon value correctly. This bug would not be noticed in Japan though, since both lat/lon values are positive there...and they rolled the gps accessory for japan only... ;-)

@califrag:
I am not sure if you can implement a directional radar, type of gui - you really need to triangulate the signal from at least 3 different sources for that...
comparing the signal streingth from 3 different locations with one device will not be accurate since the signal streingth may change with time. Also the accuracy will greatly depend on the traveling path...
The easier solution is to implement signal streingth threshold event. (if signal level reaches 75% - grep the coordinates and add to POI list)
My only concern is that all modules required work network scanning and gps navigation can fit in to memory at the same time...
califrag
March 31st, 2007, 08:31
deniska thank you for such a quick response. i agree with your statement about triangulating the signal to implement the directional radar. maybe they are illusions of grandeur. my concern too is with the memory constraints of the psp and whether i will be able to poll gps data and wifi data at the same time. i will let you know after experimenting with greenscreen program source. thanks!

Deniska, would it be possible to allow the search function to find specific streets?
I find that in areas where the address blocks aren't correct or updated yet with the geodata files, it just fails to find the road entirely.
Example:
16200 block of San Dieguito Rd., Rancho Sante Fe, CA 92067 - This comes up as no match found whatsoever.
A glance at the geodata files suggests that it does not know about those addresses, as all it sees is the 4000 block of San Dieguito Rd. - However the search does not find this address either, so you are left with no leads to try and locate the road itself on the map.
Basically, is it possible to remove the address number constraint from the search function and allow us the capability of doing a search for the street itself? It would allow folks the option of finding the address themselves if the geodata isn't updated. -OR- bring up whichever other address block exists in the geodata for that street. The street I found today can't be the only instance of this problem.
I find that when I don't include an address number it either comes up with nothing at all, or it produces the last search result that it actually found, regardless of location/street name/city.

the psp is never on "GPS on". I read that the model of my psp (TA.082 with a firmware of origin 2.71) was modified to be able to authorize the downgrade into 3.03 (that would be the idstorage which would have been modified) and which it was for that that the gps could not go with this model.

As far as I know it's dependent upon the geodata available. If that is the case you'll need to find something similar from Canada. The US geological survey is responsible for the US geodata.

One thing I think you might want to impliment in the next release is a setting to stop the screen from dimming and turning off on idle. I know you can disable it but if I am in the XMB I do like my screen to turn off. Great job so far. Can't wait until the next release!

As far as I know it's dependent upon the geodata available. If that is the case you'll need to find something similar from Canada. The US geological survey is responsible for the US geodata.
hmm, does anyone know where i can get canadian geodata? and how do i go about applying it to mapthis, please help me learn more about this, thank you

outsider, there already is Canadian geodata, in the bottom left - check GeoData and select Canada instead of USA (you should probably get the latest version of GMDL as the geodata has been updated: http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=402173&postcount=679 ). To create geodata for existing maps: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Map_This%21#Creating_GeoData.DAT_for_an_existing_m ap

Can somebody let me know if they have Mapthis and GPS working with the following setup:
- a TA-082/86 PSP
- PSP-290 GPS unit
- Firmware 3.10-OEA
And have not had to address any issues such as the 'USBHOSTFS fix' ?
Is it true that *every* TA-082/86 'downgraded' to 3.10-OEA will have issues with the PSP-290?
Cheers.

well i finally got my PSP-290 two days ago and after fiddling around with the settings and prx files i finally got it to work. i'm on a 3.10OE-A non TA-82/86 PSP.
just wanted to say thank you again to everyone that helped develop it and for current and future advancements.
in southwest michigan the most i viewed was 10-11 sats. and fixed on to about 4-6 of them and thats inside my house. i get better signal outside and in my car.
the only part i don't like is that it takes forever for it to fix on the sats.
the speed is on the DOT with my car's speedometer. which is great. can't wait to use it for longer trips.
thanks!
i ran into one problem...i have two maps loaded on my MS and when i try to load the first map it hangs up and then the psp shuts off. but if i select the second map first THEN exit out and select the first map then it loads up....any ideas why?

I have 2 questions. First does this work without a gps, ie it will just let you look at maps? Second can I download maps for canada. If there is a tutorial out there somewhere, would some stick the link up here for me. Thanks Ryan

Hey thanks for the response.
Since then I received the PSP-290, and gave it a go...
I had 'downgraded' to 3.10 OEA with the version that included the TA-082 patches.
It worked first pop, like a charm. Nothing needed to be done. Both the green program and MapThis worked perfectly. Picked up 10 satellites.
Anybody know about converting Garmin maps for use with MapThis?

What prx files do u use ? The ones that came with the green program or 3.10 ones ?

I started out with the 3.10 ones which I extracted, but didn't seem to work.
I was out testing it but luckily had the 2.71 ones from the green program (290 TEST) still on the card. So with PSP Filer, I just copied them into the MapThis directory over the 3.10 ones, and it worked straight up.

Because of the geodata.dat "problem" in Europe ...
Is there any possibility, to convert other maps
(like TomTom, Garmin, Medion ...)
for use with MapThis?
specially the geodata?
Would be great =)

Anyone able to send the 3.30 prx's?

easiest way is to extract them by yourself ;)
Because I've heard sending them "around"
is illegal.
But don't know if it's right ?!

what we need now is 3.40 prxs... however there is not a decrypter for it. its been said that 3.30 decrpter works, however it gets stuck at idcheck.prx and never gets to the usb ones. its also said that you can alter the 3.30 decrypter main code to continue after idcheck.prx - but i dont know how... any one know about this so that i can get the 3.40 prxs maybe they are better... or the same? any insight?
