[Tutorial][Newbie Proof] PSPnavi: How to turn your PSP into a GPS Navigation System or a Map Viewer

Well all the waiting has finally paid off; I got the gpsp cable today and read a few other forums on what I needed to do to make this happen, I did not find any tutorials on how to fully implement this anywhere else, so here’s my write up on how its done:

DIGG THIS

http://digg.com/gaming_news/PSPNavi_Turn_Your_PSP_into_a_GPS

1.What you need to have
a. A homebrew capable PSP (though tutorial explains how this works with DAX’s custom firmware only).
b. A self-powered GPS receiver (not all models have been tested) or you can use the PSP’s official receiver (PSP-290 (http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-2pz-71-bh-49-en-84-j-70-1mij.html))
c. A PSP to GPS cable (not needed if you are using PSP-290):
i.You can make your own by going to this link: http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=30035
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PSP OR YOUR GPS RECIEVER WHEN BUILDING YOUR OWN CABLE.
ii. Buy a factory made PSP to USB B mini cable from www.moby.cn (http://www.moby.cn)
d. Deniska’s Mapthis! Mapping software: http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/bin/mapViewer_v03.zip
e. Mapthis! 0.4 EBOOT.PBP: http://www.sendspace.com/file/qr7uks
f. In7ane’s Map Downloader: http://www.sendspace.com/file/90i8iu
g. PSP Car stand (optional)2. What you need to do
a. Copy the mapViewer and mapViewer% folders from the mapViewer_v03 (in step 1(d)) folder to your game folder on your memory stick and make sure your kernel is set to 1.50 if you have any gps pther than the psp-290 (please refer to the FAQ in Deniska's discussion forum for important details on making this work with psp-290)
b. Copy the appropriate EBOOT file (depending on if u have a HOLUX GPS(or any other non psp-290) receiver or PSP-290) from the mapthis! 0.4 file you downloaded in step 1(e) into the mapViewer folder on your memory stick (overwrite the current one).
c. Copy the ‘system’ folder from the the mapthis! 0.4 file you downloaded in step 1(e) into the mapViewer folder on your memory stick (overwrite the current).
d. Start up your PSP to make sure the application runs fine and mess around with the sample map included of the London Tube. (if the app doesn’t run refer to the troubleshooting section)
e. Now that you have the mapping software, you need to download the map of the area you want to navigate through. Extract the File you downloaded in step 1(f) and go to GMDL/bin/Debug and run ‘Global Map Download Tool’ you should get the following screen: http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/gmdlstartupde0.jpg
f. Choose which website you want to get your map from the menu on the left e.g Google maps, Google maps satellite, VE map(MSN maps) etc.
http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/7382/gmdlmapsourceef5.jpg

g. Move and and zoom to the map until the area you see is what you want to put on your psp, for example if I wanted to put the map of Toronto on my psp I’d zoom to until I get the coverage I need: http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/gmdlfocusedmapwz8.jpg
To ensure you are getting exactly the area you want, you get the map to the approximate area you want, then click on the 'Preview 1x' button - That will show you what you will actually be getting on your PSP.

h. Now scroll to the top of the window and name your map in the ‘Map Name (start with _)’ . I know its obvious but make sure to start with an ‘_’ when naming your map e.g. I want to name my map Toronto I’d type _Toronto in the field.

i. If you don’t live in USA or Canada ignore this step. Now scroll down until the end of the menu on the left and check the geodata marker and USA or Canada depending on where the map your downloading is located. If you don’t live in USA or Canada ignore this step. The geodata of a map contains stuff like addresses, points of interests etc, Canada doesn’t have as much as the USA though.

j. Scroll up and click on the ‘Download the map’ button. You should get a popup, wait for the tiles to load and then your screen should look like this: http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/gmdltilesmb2.jpg To reduce the size of the map file uncheck any tiles that you don’t want available on the map, for example I just uncheck the ones that contain only water. Then uncheck the Zoom levels that you don’t need, all zoom levels are checked by default. When you’re done click on the ‘Uncheck any tiles which you do not wish to download to closer zoom levels, also uncheck any zoom layers you wish to skip, then click here’ button (longest button I’ve ever seen). It should take you back to the main window and go on the preview tab. The download progress is displayed on the Title bar of the window: http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/gmdldownloadei4.jpg

k. After the download is done depending on whether you checked the geodata option earlier, you either get a geodata window in which the program will automatically start downloading the geodata for the map and then another window will popup saying ‘you may now close this window’ or it will finish the the download and tell you that it finished creating the map. http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/gmdldonews9.jpg

l. After its done downloading the map. Close the application and copy the map folder (_Toronto in my case), located in GMDL/bin/Debug to the maps folder located in the mapViewer folder on your psp game file. My map was 23 mb in size; it varies depending on what type of map you choose (hybrid, sat etc) and the area you downloaded etc.

m. Go back to your psp, run the app and choose the map you just made, see if it works, try zooming going to the edges etc.

To build a hybrid map, follow the guides set up for a normal map, then uncheck "auto browser" and choose MS VE on the left menu bar. Wait for the MS map to load, then zoom in on the location as usual. Once there, choose "hybrid" next to VE Map on the left menu bar, and choose the hybrid button on the MS map page. Now you should be able to pull up the preview 1x and see the following:
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/3655/scrn1mu6.jpg
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9387/scrn2pi0.jpg

(credit goes to ST240sx for the Hybrid map section)

And this is what you'll see after you generate the map using the normal method, and loading it on the PSP.

3. Creating Points of Interests (POIs)

Points of interests are points on a map that symbolize a certain location that you would like to be mared on the map.
a. In GMDL, go to the ‘POI’ tab
b. Choose a POI using any of the maps OR download a file in KML (google map format), CSV (garmin format) or OV2 format that contains a list of POIs.
c. Enter the name of the POI collection starting with and underscore in the Save POI field.
d. Click on the ‘Save POI(start with _):’ button and copy the generated file in to the map folder you created earlier.

Creating POI Files in GMDL (credit goes to ST240sx):

The first step as described in the guide was to click on the POI tab at the top. Once the map loaded, zoom in until you have the entire city in the view. You'll want this so you'll get all the results, which you can simply add to existing maps of the area, and this will only display POI's for that map (did that make any sense?) Anyway...moving on.

Next, click on the "Get Numbers" box on the right menu near the top. You'll see all of the Lat & Lon for the area appear. Now type your search topic in the "seach for" box at the top of the right menu (not the web page). In my case, steak house, and then click the "List" box midway in the right menu, and wait for the list to load at the bottom (this may take a minute).

Once you have the list, use the scroll bar to reach the last entry and shft+click to highlight them all. Now change the "Icon" with the drop down, and give the POI list a title always beginning with "_" (I chose _DALLASSTEAKHOUSES for mine) and click "Save POI".

The save defaults to the debug folder in the MapThis!\GMDL\bin\Debug directory. You can now copy this to any existing or future maps of this same area, no matter how large, or small you make your map. The program will only display the POI's for the area you chose.

4. Creating a trip with directions for use with Mapthis!

NOTE: This is a better copy created by The-Avenger, all credit goes to him.

a. Start GMDL
b. Click the directions tab up the top.
c. Next to the list button, select 'Google'.
d. Change to maps.google.com to the appropriate address matching your country/where you live.
e. In the actual Google Webpage (on the left) press 'get directions' link.
f. In the 2 boxes that appear, type in the starting location in the first box, and the ending location in the second box. (Enter as precise as possible)
g. If went fine, you should see a line on the map going from the two locations, and directions on the left.
h. Type in the 'from' box on the right (not the google webpage, the GMDL feature on the right) whatit says on the left after 'From:'(that is on the google webpage).
i. Type in the 'to' under the 'from' box (The GMDL feature, not the google webpage) on the right what it says on the left after 'To:' (On the google webpage).
j. Press the 'Get Values' button.
k. Press the 'List' button.
l. If all went well, the directions down the bottom right should be the same on the left in the google webpage. (Please ignore the MIDPOINT things.)
m. Type in a name after the 'Save POI (start with _):' button. Such as: _To My Mum's House
n. Press the 'Save POI (start with _):' button.
o. The file should be in the debug folder.
p. Drag that file into the map folder that it belongs to in your PSP MMS.

5. Connecting a GPS receiver to the PSP to enable tracking and navigation.
a. Go to ms0:PSP/GAME/mapViewer/system and open the config file using notepad.
b. Change the baudrate depending on the one that your gps reciever uses, if u don’t know, its usually in the manual of it in the specifications section.
c. Change the speed fix depending on if you want your speed values to be in mph or kph.
d. Change the altfix dependnig on if you want it in feet or metres.
e. Change your time zone offset of the GMT in your area
f. Leave everything else for now.
g. Disconnect your psp and run Mapthis! And connect your GPS reciever to your psp via he cable you bought or made (refer to the ‘What you need to have’ section)
h. Press square to acivate GPS mode, the map should scroll until your location is in sight. Drive around to make sure the values of in the side panel are accurate.
i. Mess around with the application to find out what buttons do what (not while driving of course)Troubleshooting
Q: Mapthis! won't start, what’s wrong?
A: Make sure you are running the 1.50 kernel and that you copied the right EBOOT in the right place.(This app has only been tested with 3.03 OE firmware not 2.71 SE)
Q: The Global Map Downloader application will not start, what’s wrong?
A: You need to have .NET framework 2 or higher installed.
Q: The area coverage I chose in GMDL doesn’t match the map it created, why?
A: This happened to me too, just make the area in GMDL bigger to ensure the map on your psp has all the area you need.

From member PDG, all kudos goes to him:

A much needed detailed guide for an fantastic piece of PSP homebrew.

Nice one.

Thanks a lot for the guide outsider, I'm finally going to get this App going on my PSP, have only seen it in action on a mate's from another state.

I think play-asia just got another sale for the gps unit :)

Edit: I know this has probably been answered many times before, but the japanese GPS unit will work fine with this app on my Australian PSP running 3.03oe-c right?

Thanks.

NOTE: The Original copy was taken from http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=49838&page=68 (post no. 675) it was edited for grammar and structure. I’m having trouble getting this to work so if any of you get it, please post explaining any differences in the steps.

a. Start GMDL
b. Click on the Directions Tab
c. Choose one of: local.live, google or yahoo from the right menu bar
d. If you chose google, choose an appropriate site e.g maps.google.ca for Canada
(map24 is disabled at the moment)
e. Enter Starting point
f. Enter Ending point
g. Click on “calculate route”
you may skip this step but then you won`t see the calculated route in GMDL
h.Once route has been calculated click the “Get Values” button
i. Activate the “create intermittent” function and leave the default value, otherwise you will only have the most important waypoints in your map and it won’t look like an outlined route from start to end.
j. Click Button List
k. Enter a name for the route
make sure it starts with ‘_’ i.e. _myfirstroute
l. Click Button “Save POI”
m. You will find the generated file in GMDL/bin/Debug

Dude , something you may wish to check and/or add to your Tut...

To ensure you are getting exactly the area you want, you get the map to the approximate area you want, then click on the 'Preview 1x' button - That will show you what you will actually be getting on your PSP.

However, it is a bit odd - for example if I check it on Preview 1x, and everything is a bit too far to the right, you might then presume that to go and drag the map to the left a little would fix it. But if you check the Preview 1x after doing so, you will find that the map actually may have moved a great deal further to the left, or perhaps not at all. This is likely due to the square 'blocks' which the maps are made up of, and it 'snaps' to the nearest.

It would be awesome if there was a way to address this in future versions of GMDL... Slightly better accuracy, as I find it hard to get exactly the area I want when getting maps for slightly larger areas - the only way would be to take it to a lower zoom level, but that would make the map unreasonably large and too long to download.

Would also be cool if there was a way to download maps only at a wide zoom level - so you can download a broad road map of a large area, or to give an overview of a country.

Yea, i think somethings wrng with gmdl in that aspect, i guess we'll have to wait for future releases to find out. i edited my tutorial, thanks for teh suggestion.

outsider, It appears that this guide was written with Holux GPS in mind...

Setting it to work with PSP-290 requires some extra tricks, already mentioned in PSP-290 release thread:

outsider, It appears that this guide was written with Holux GPS in mind...

Setting it to work with PSP-290 requires some extra tricks, already mentioned in PSP-290 release thread:
-You need to run in under 3.xx kernel

-You need to extract usbacc.prx and usbgps.prx and copy them to mapviewer's folder.

FAQ threads in disscussion forum have all the details...

In addition to what Deniska just wrote, which are very important points; let me just clarify that to run the PSP-290 GPS with the 3.xx kernel, you need DAX's Custom Firmware and you put the mapthis folders under the GAME3XX folder.

If you're using the serial GPS then any homebrew capable PSP is ok and put the folders under GAME or with DAX's Custom Firmware GAME150.

EDIT: Also, the PSP-290 GPS will work all over the world with ANY PSP. MapThis works on certain maps that are downloaded with the tool provided by In7ane. If you want to know if this will work where you live, basically just check MSN and Google Maps and see if they have map coverage for your location. If one of them has, you're in luck! It will work!

outsider

putting the mapviewer folders in teh game folder seems to work too.

@rockiecxh; any version will work regradelss if u use a gps reciever or not, i suggest using the latest version for obvious reasons.

Both the psp-290 and teh holux gpslim 240 ae good looking an mall in size but from what ive read teh holux seems to have faster fixing time and better stability but psp 290 is cheaper (about 40$ cheaper) than teh gpslim 240. Personally id recomend the holux gpslim 240.

hey guys, i followed all the steps but I currently don't have the GPS unit, because i want to make sure it will work in my area. I live in Toronto and I downloaded the map as instructed, which ended up to be 200MB. I uploaded to my memory card on my psp and then tried opening it with mapthis!, all that happened was the orange light on the left kept on flickering for 3 hrs and nothing loaded, i got tired of waiting so i just turned it off. I quickly thought it was the size of the map, but then i made a map only 3mb big, and the same thing happens... does anyone know what i should do?

When i go to the satelite info, it shows only a couple satelites in and out but never fixed. Any suggestions anyone can give me to get this thing to work or fix satellites? I hope i didnt waste $60 bucks from play-asia to just throw this thing away. Any help would be great! I appreciate all the good work that has been put to this site.

I assume thatr you already tried standing still in open places with clear view of the sky, so...
try
-lowering the cpu to 111MHZ (from the same screen)
-adjusting the device's angle

Alternatively - try it with MapPlus ISO (see if you can get a fix with it (there is a GPS screen in the prog) - if you don't get a fix - you may want to consider exchanging the unit....

here is the map i took to test out for TORONTO, its 4-5MB in size, apparently, the maps that are already inside the mapthis folder work perfectly fine, but when i load the ones I make myself don't work.

Btw, i currently run 3.03 OE-C
I placed the mapthis and mapthis% folders in my GAME150 folder. I do not have the GPS unit, i simply want to see the map working before i buy one.

Also, whenever i replace the EBOOT file with PSP-290 EBOOT, i get a blue screen with MAPTHIS on top and Loading USB Accessory module... error
Therefore i didnt replace the eboot file and simply ran the software with the original eboot.

Thanks again deniska.

ok i just tried that map and it loads in less than a second and works fine so u made your map correctly. now make sure you hae set the kernel to 1.50 (from the recovery menu), also teh memory stick that you are usuing might be bad, try anotehr one, finally i dont knwo if it makes a differnce, but ut the mapviewer folders in the GAME folder rather than the GAME150 folder. other than that i dont see what the poblem might be. hope this helps. You sample map seems to be missing tiles on 2x & 4x zooms... other than that - it seems to work ok...

Did you desect those zooms while generating the map? if not - this might be some gmdl problem or, perhaps some outage occured during the map download from google...

I just thought it could be worth mentioning as some people will be using very large maps, and as a result may be looking for a new high capacity memory stick.

Although this is probably not the case with nesshentai as his map is only 5mb, I would still like to mention for everyone to watchout for fake official large capacity Sony memory sticks - I got stung with one by a local seller on an auction site. It was almost impossible to tell from a real one, but the build quality on the adaptor that came with it (to adapt to full memory stick size) alerted me, and I managed to get my money back after comparing it with photos on a site showing the differences.

The problem with these is not that they are simply fakes, as I wouldn't mind a cheap fake if it worked, but they often actually put in a 1 gig chip and hard code it to report as a 4 gig chip. It shows up as 4 gig on your computer, and if you copy files to it, it shows as having copied, but if you try and access those files past the 1 gig limit, it will crash or error out.

Here's a link:

Hi.
Everyone seems to be well keen with the gps option on psp. I'm a bit disapointed. Besides it taking quite a while to fix, is there any point having one living in the uk? Yeah sure you can see where your at on a map and where your going towards, but if you can't search for POIs or plan a route with gmdl beforehand, there really is no point.
Now is there any way of getting geodata for the uk, france or any of europe? I've read the tutorial and understand that the european union countries have privatized geodata.
With gmdl while trying to create geodata for London, the program crashed saying there was a wrong input string and couldn't handle the error.
Now I've been browsing for a while and can't seem to find out if I have a solution or not.
I've looked on torrent sites etc to try to downoad uk maps but not a chance of finding one.
Any other uk people with the same problem?
Also what i dont get, is how is it possible to create plans for the uk with gmdl and put them on the psp (which surely is geodata), yet not possible to download a whole city's geodata?

Hope i made myself clear.
Any help guys?
Cheers

outsider
May 7th, 2007, 05:51
Links fixed :)

and cas32, im not sure how to gt geodata to europe, and GMDL just downloads maps from google maps, ve etc with lat/long coordinates already mapped on it, so it doesnt get any geodata, it gets what the map site supplies (a bunch of jpegs with lat and long values mapped on to them) geodata doesnt come from teh map supplier, GMDL has canada's and us's becuase they are available to teh public. this gps application is still useful if u are planning a trip for example i had to go to a school in a different area than wer i live and i used gmdl to create the route, and i got there flawlessly, pretty good for a gaming handheld.

hi, there
I successfully installed the MapThis and loaded the GTA map into my PSP. I dont have the GPS receiver yet. Then I tried to load the trip file I created, but it never finished the loading process. Does anybody know the reason? thanks! BTW, my map folder directory is "/PSP/Maps/_GTAPlus", and I put the trip file "_to my Home" into "/PSP/Maps", is that correct? my mapthis folders are in "GAME" folder and the kenerl set to 1.50 already. Never mind. i figured it out. Actually you can put mapviewer folders either in "GAME" or "GAME150", they both are working fine.
The key is you have to set the kernel to 1.5 and put the trip file into the map folder you created, such as "/PSP/GAME/_GTAPlus/_to my home".
Thanks for outsider's great instruction.

Well when I select "Phoenix East Valley" from the main menu, it seems like it's loading off the memory stick (access light blinks), well it doesn't seem to ever load. I let it sit for over an hour and it still never loads. I can't exit or shut off the system, I have to remove the battery to reset it.. How long does it usually take to load custom maps?

If you have looked at the map files you dowloaded you would see that 1x has twice as many tiles as 2x and so on and 64x has probably only a few tiles.

So 1x is the most detailed and 64x is just an outline of the whole map.

PSP with DAX's custom firmware 3.40 and the psp-290 offical gps attchement.

Im from Australia and have had no problem genrating the maps as there quiet detailed of Sydney.

Can anyone suggest what the problem is. I have tried the map viewers under all the game folder and the same thing occurs. I have also changed between kernel 1.50 and 3.40. I haven't seen anyone else with the issue as I have googled it quiet a bit.

Now that your directory is corrupt - I would move other programs away, format the MS and re-istall everything...

Thanks for the reply, deniska. It's funny that you mention it now.. because the _Phoenix East Valley I have does not have any 1x or 8x subdirectories in there like it does in the _New York Subway folder.

The first thing that comes to mind is a bad cable, but its improbable. It's weird, im using GPSlim 240, which supposibly has a baud rae of 4800, but it doesnt work when i set it to that, it only works with 34800 (weird..), so try a diff baudrate just in case. Also does your gps work on your pc fine?maybe teh gps unit is defective. What is teh quality of teh signal that you are getting? high or low? Other than that i can't see what the problem might be.
and fyi, the usb prx's are only needed if you are using sony's psp-290

i need a special cable not sold with my unit to use it in mouse mode on my pc, but it can be used in bluetooth... i have yet to get a bluetooth adaptor to see if it works on a pc, i was just hoping to get it working on my psp

thanks for the reply though

ill try diff baudrates and maybe look for a cheap bluetooth device

EDIT: i tried the old gpslim 236 viewer, it works, i typed the coords into google maps and it came to my house... so idk why my map viewer doesnt work....

could somebody just upload their config file that works with a gpslim 236 to help solve my noobish-ness

Ok hopefully I don't get flamed here. I am usually very good at guides but this one has slipped my mind on what could be the problem.

First off this is what I have:

- System Software 3.40 OE-A
- I have the Sony GPS Module PSP-390 I have placed the appropriate eboot.pbp into the mapviewer folder for the sony gps.
- I have extracted from 3.40 both usbacc.prx and usbgps.prx files and they are in the mapViewer folder

I have a GAME340 folder and am running the 3.40 Kernal (I tried using the 1.5 Kernal with GAME folder but when it came to starting up and loading the USB device it just hangs there)
It starts up fine with Kernal 3.40 and says the USB loaded ok then it brings me to the main menu where I can choose the maps
If I start the GPS function (square button) it says it is on but the signal is all Red bars and if I go into the options for the GPS it shows it as OFF.

And that's where I am at. I am not sure what its going on.

Any tips would be appreciated. I have checked through the threads here and haven't found much.

Cheers!

Well first I thought this was good news...but in checking my mobo it has IC1003 on the right hand side when I open up my UMD slot. I have search forums and this indicates that I have a TA-82 motherboard.

Does the USB fix apply to this version?

Thanks again!

EDIT: Sorry to waste your time...I see on the FAQ it is in fact TA-82 you were probably referring to...I am going to try some more out...thanks for the lead!

deniska, I'm sorry I don't know what you mean?

I was following this tutorial when creating my map
http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/pspnavi-how-to-turn-your-psp-into-a-gps-navigation-system-or-a-map-viewer-60230.html
I don't see anything mentioned about empty tiles or GPSFS.

Thanks again

Anybody have any idea on my end what I'm doing wrong since I followed the tutorial correctly?

I am having a problem with GMDL 0.4.16b when I am making maps.

The GMDL sometimes make the finished map-folders look different, and thereby MapThis! refuses to read them.

The demo-map _GLOBAL_MAP has folder for every zoom level that is downloaded.

But the folders the program creates, dont have theese "zoom-folders", but has a few other files, some icons and some GPSFS files, but no map-files.

Is this correct? Because MapThis! refuses to read them.

i was thinking, if there was some possible way to get train scheduals on the internet to help avoid trains... or maybe traffic reports from news teams, to find the best route possible... that would be really cool

if it says theres almost 50,000 of which are empty.... i would have to say something is wrong... maybe your download stopped and in7ane's downloader messed up?

(btw, i really know nothing about this... just using common sence)

plus, a little bug i found... if you zoom in and out really fast while scrolling across the map (i was bored) the maps freeze, and the empty grid is everywhere, no matter how long you wait, even if you reload the maps... you have to close out of the program and reset it, to make it work again... also when that happens, you cant close out of the program by pressing select twice, only by holding the power button untill the psp shuts off... :D

I'm running most up to date version of MapThis!, on TA-82 mobo, with 3.40 OE

GPSFS is correct.
Copy the whole folder onto your MS and it should work fine.

First info:

Live in- Northpole, Alaska (yes it does exist)
Firmware- 3.30 OE-A' (A2)
Motherboard- Normal 1.5
Using GPS unit- PSP-290
Using PRX's- 2.71's (only ones I could get to work)
Running under- 1.5 kernal

I folowed the guide exactly and before I posted my problems in the beggining, I tinkered with mapviewer a bit. I put it in the GAME330 folder of mine and mapviewer displays my map fine. Also I did try the green progie and both that and mapviewer could find satellites.
But... (yep you knew I was going to say that)
I can't get any satellites to fix into my location (yes I pushed square to turn on my gps and I set my speed to 111mhz), aka it doesn't even bother to zoom in to where I am/ doesn't bother to locate me. I don't want to bother doing POI because I just want the program to work and find me. I stayed outside for more than five minutes and even drove my vehicle for 20 minutes and no satellites locked unto me whatsoever. I gave up after my trials and hopped on this forum to gain some help from the community or it's creators. What am I doing wrong?
Did I need to create geodata?
POI needed?
Wrong PRX?
*Note I put a camprx in my root, the prx's in the mapviewer folder (not % one) and made a new folder in mapviewer call 271 with the prx's inside)*

click start, goto control panel, open add/remove programs, look for a program called ".NET Frameworks 2.0" make sure its installed... i think downloading is where the frameworks comes in :)

if you cant find it, www.microsoft.com and search for .net frameworks 2.0 (make sure its for the 32-bit or 64 bit version of XP, if your on xp, and if you dont know about the 32-bit or 64-bit version of your operating system, right click on my computer, hit properties and look on the "General" tab and look under "System" i think the 64-bit version says its 64, if it only says "Microsoft Windows XP" then its 32)

that wont be the problem because if you dont have .net 2.0 then you wont even be able to start gmdl.

Yup...New to the forum. Downloaded the app a few days ago and have been hooked since (wife's ready to smash the psp). I read through the guide, which was most helpful getting mapthis! up and running, so much thanks there.

I've been messing around with the maps, and wanted to give a little more detail on a couple of things. The first is how to set up a Hybrid Map, so here goes my meager attempt at instructions and screen shots...yeah I know my photos suck.

Now you should be able to pull up the preview 1x and see the following.

And this is what you'll see after you generate the map using the normal method, and loading it on the PSP.

Here's my simple steps for searching POI's to make semi-custom maps of interest. In my case, I'm a steak & potatoes guy, so I wanted to see steakhouses in my area, and here's what I came up with.

Hope this helps someone...

well, I don't know that.

I had to upgrade from 3.02, too. I found a easyInstaller to Upgrade it. With that you just connect your PSP with the PC, start the program and then start the updater on the PSP. It was quite easy.

Perhaps I've got it at home because I'm at work right now.

If I've got it on my Desktop at home I will upload it here.

Perhaps this EasyUpgrader should be linked at the Tutorial so nobody will have a problem to start the mapViewer...

So, here I am...You can find the easyUpdater right here, it's really easy:

Additionally I'll uploaded my mapViewer-Folder, so you can be sure that it will load without any problems - enjoy!

when you click to download your map, you can choose what fields you want to download. In the same window on the upper left the zoom-scales are listed.

There you can uncheck the zoom-levels you do not want to download!

so ldijc, then I don't have to send you another PM. I was a lot out of time yesterday, sorry.

This has been answered a few times already.
Basically this variable determines the satellite search algorithm.
0 - start from scratch
1 - use previously captured location (would only work if you did not move far from the location captured during prev session (the info is usually dumped in a file in a root of your MS..
2 - use sat positions data - the fastest but would only work if the receiver need to reaquire satellites after a short pause...

I suggest using "1" as your setting...

GPS Applications/software for my PSP official 3.50fw, is there any?

Unfortunately all firmwares above 3.03 can't currently be downgraded and so you can't run Mapthis!, and the only official software that can support the device are games like MGS;portable ops, hot shots golf and Sony's official GPS software, which is only available in Japan, and most likely is in Japanese and doesn't include much, if any, worldwide support

If the higher firmwares (anything above 3.03) can be made to run unsigned code (which judging from the current trend seems likely:) ) then you would be able to install a custom firmware and run mapthis

dude, what version of the mapthis software are you running? what version of the gmdl? are you sure you are loading the latest versions of both? 0.499 mapthis and 0.4.16 or 0.4.17 of gmdl? sounds like your not.

Hi all - couldn't find any info by searching but I have a question - is it possible to extract maps from other websites? Reason being is that there is a website called diddlefinger.com that has the Google maps for Japan with an overlay of street and location names in English. Is there someway to integrate it into GMDL?

Thanks in advance.

in7ane
June 28th, 2007, 15:57
sKilled, not diddlefinger.com since their overlay is just labels created on the fly (not, transparent, tiles). To find out if a map can be used, in Firefox, select Tools > Page Info > Media and see if you can see the tiles that you want to use in the list (for example http://www.onnyturf.com/subway/ can be used).

hi guys,

I am new to this and I was wondering if MapThis will calculate directions to a certain address while i am in my car. The directions for creating a trip with directions for use with Mapthis! seemed like you needed to do it on a computer first. Can you just put in addresses into the psp and have Mapthis give you directions? thanks!

meier3283
June 28th, 2007, 20:51
No Deepster, that's something it cannot do just yet. I'm told that we don't currently have access to the database of "points" that would make that calculation possible, on the fly.

FatesWebb
June 28th, 2007, 21:12
however you can put in an address, and have it draw a line from your current location, to the address, so that you can navigate the way there yourself, which in my opinion is almost as good.....

What up Meier3283, I know you....

I am running 3.40-OE along with PSP-290, and the maps with Mapthis run fine, but when I put GPS Mode "On," It does not indicate my location at all. There is no green proggle showing my location even though I am fixed on 3-4 SATs. what do I do now? Is there anyone out there that can do a new tutorial just for those using the psp-290? The "newbie proof" tutorial is outdated. YOU might know what you are doing, but more and more people get confused everyday.

[Tutorial][Newbie Proof] PSPnavi: How to turn your PSP into a GPS Navigation System or a Map Viewer

Hi,

I have a first gen Japanese psp, using DarkAlex's 3.40 OE-a.
MapThis 0461S Beta
gmdl 0.5.01a

I have generated maps, extracted my prxes from my psp (i tried the dumper from the firmware sources, and from the recovery screen too), put the folder like this:

\PSP\GAME150\mapViewer\maps\allthegeneratedGPSFS
\PSP\GAME150\mapViewer\
\PSP\GAME150\mapViewer\usbgps.prx
\PSP\GAME150\mapViewer\usbacc.prx

I tried putting it in GAME340, and booting from both firmwares. Doesn't seem to work.

Now the latest error is that it says loading gps modules and it turns off the power by itself.

Can anyone help?

hats off to all u guys denskia n in7ane.. been thinkin of gettin a gps but didnt know which to get, either psp290 or the holux unit.. so i've been using it just as a mapviewer.. been reading gps forums for like months now deciding which.. cos reading all these forums, it seems there is lotsa ppl having problems starting it up.. especially the psp-290.. so last week i finally got my gps... and the one i got was the holux gps240 after reading denskia recommendations for it..

so today it came, charged it, cable arrived the day before, plugged it all in, moved the mapviewerV5, stood near the window, BAM, 30 secs, detected me straight away.. Madness... went for a drive around the neighboorhood, perfect except for when u stand still the cursor moves a bit but thats fine, cos i've used gps in the past and there is a +/- 5m..

atm i'm at around a 400mb, 70% of melbourne, australia.. donations coming your way... YEAH!! did a small hybrid map near my house and it was great, but if your walkin the bearing doesnt move.. guess you have to run a bit to get it to move tho...

only thing i've got to put in now is the POI of speed camera, red light camera.. the only thing is the sound.. i put the speed limit at 62km/h, but once i hit there and over and don't hear anything...

edit: any chance of doing like, if you set a marker, the proggie calculates the quickest route to getting there... but i guess u guys would've done it already if you could... now that would be awesome for ppl out of the US and Canada that can't use geodata..

cheers.. keep up the good work...

edit: hmm, can't seem to donate anymore...

sounds work... just that in the map folder wasnt any .mp3 files i realized... yea.. i've got a fm tuner connected to the cable i bought from pc.mobile to the car stereo... atm i'm at 80% on the dl of Victoria... 680mb now... cant wait till its done... it's been 5hr goin on 6 now.. and the funny thing is Victoria is one of the smallest states in australia... dang...
thank goodness i've got a spare 2gb just for mapthis!

hey 1 question.. i can, later on, place my POI from a kml file when i'm done makin the map right?? i know that i can set it up with gmdl and all my other maps has it... just wondering if i could do after.. i didnt read about the POI guide until i was dl'ing alrdy

edit: i have a kml file of all the speed cameras, red light cameras and mobile cameras for the whole of australia

double edit: or can i load the GPSFS files onto GMDL software and then add the kml files and save it?? is that how you do it??

What GPS Device do you use ?
And if you use a 290 did you extract your own .prf files ?

Did you press Square to turn the GPS unit on and i hope youre outside when searching for signals ;)

I got my Holux M1000 working this weekend
Pretty sweet, i also discovered that the unit uses the same batteries as Nokia phones BL-5C so i tried one out after i measured the polarity and it worked :D

Turning off WiFi helps and if youre outside, some days there is poor reception for satelite signals.

But if you find some you should find more if you move around.

Maby some sats were kidnapped ;)
It sounds like bad signal reception or interference from the PSP, try setting the clockspeed to 110Mhz or the default 98Mhz with MapThis v0.5 go outside and wait for a while.

I got an extentioncord for my 290 unit and that helps a bit, i can extend the unit about 1½ meters from the PSP and get better signal by that.

I would just by pre-made PSP-290 extention cable from pc-mobile.net...
It;s really tricky to get a good connection ofr that extra wire, you need to pull to power psp-290 unit..
It never worked well with my DYI cable but works great with pc-mobile premade cable (they use special pins with a spring inside)

And yes - you should get noticably better reception..

HI
At last the PSP-290 its working on my PSP SLIM ;)
Thanks for this great software.

I woud like to report two bugs:

The altimeter its not working ok bacause when im not moving the altitude gives me diferent readings and never stop, for EX: it reads 35meters and 30 seconds after it reads 55meters.

The other bug its the speedmeter, without moving i get readings from 0,5km/h to 1,2 km/h.

Here in my position i could get 12 satellites, but not all of them get fixed, i think its normal.

Thanks a lot for this amazing software.

Well, what you are reading are probably the so-called "navigation errors" of the GPS receiver (working with one frequency only) and not bugs of MapThis!. Basically you got a navigation solution from your receiver each second: since it is a measurement process it contains an error whose order of magnitude can be several meters from time to time, especially in vertical (=altitude), depending on several factors...

For the velocity: an error of 1 km/h means an error of ~ 0.27 m/s. This is the "absolute value" of the error.
If you had access to the error components (on lat, long, lat) and you take an average over some long time your average velocity would be zero.
This is also within the performance of the GPS receiver for a velocity solution therefore...

... everything seems fine with your navigation set-up!!

Thanks for your help.
Can you tell me some GPS receivers manufacturers working with more frequencys?

Hi, usually GPS receiver manufacturers use single-frequency (L1) technologies. In order to improve accuracy, use of augmentation systems (WAAS in USA, egnos in Europe) and DGPS tecniques are used, but still single frequency.

hey Nieko, thank you for your kindly reply. a simple yes or no would have been more helpful though. and mind you, some of us are students who gets enough beating from our own class text books and there are 22 pages for this particular GPS.......

It would also be nice if people were less lazy or learned how to search well.

See http://www.google.com/search?q=psp+290+m33+3.52+works. First result explains how to do it, and the page itself already says: "I have 3.52 m33-2 and it works great never thought it would be so small and thanks to mapthis i can use it".

Would be cool if people had to take a quiz before signing up on this board and having to search for stuff using the Search module and posting answers to a form just so they are validated and marked as a user that has fulfilled a forced search and passed ;)

Hi, Everyone,

I'm a newbie and thanking in advance for your help with my questions.

I have the following
1). PSP slim System Software: 3.71 M33-2
2). PSP-290 (GPR Receiver)

According to the guides in the forum, I need
1). Mapthis! 0.5.0ZZ
2). Mapthis! 0.497 EBOOT
3). In7ane's Map Downloader

Do I need to do the followings as posted by member PDG?

Question 1: Do you need .prx files for your PSP-290 GPS? Want to know how to extract them? -=[Click here for my flash guide]=-
Question 3: How do i get MapThis + PSP-290 GPS and my maps working? -=[Click here for a guide]=-

neville.james
November 30th, 2007, 02:49
Yes you need the .PRX files.
The .PRX files will be on your Sim card after you format it in the PSP, use a new , blank card, for this. An old card will have them there already. Just search the SIM card on your PC .
The USB connection to your pc will then see these files on the card in the directory.
Then all the other support software comments will make sense.

An excellent guide is on this link
http://www.vampire.se/misc/PSP/flashguide/GPS/generatemaps_us/index.htm

Nieko

SIM cards go in phones, memory sticks go in PSPs :). Also, new cards or old cards don't matter much. Formatting using FAT32 does seem to work for some people.

Infranetdog: see http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/ for the newest version of MapThis. For this version, you won't need any PRX files anymore.

If you're stuck, you can indeed try PDG's tutorials (except question 1, you don't need it).

I Have a question. Why is it when I make my Poi's it adds on a bunch of other locations that i didn't choose. For example i search for Edwards Theatres, then i highlight all the edwards theatres in the search results. Name it _Edwards Cinema. and when i look it up in the psp it shows all of the results, not just the ones i highlighted.

MCoolU: MapThis also loads _MY_POIS by default, is this what's happening?

the_5treet: it does that when the map is very small and contains only 1 tile. You can (re)download maps using GMDL.

Infranetdog: have you installed .NET 2 framework?

Hi,

With help from this forum, I got the PSP-290 working from my PSP-2000. The map onlines where I'm while I'm driving and received voice warning of speed limit.

If you're using the latest version of MapThis 0.5.20 then you don't need to do much i.e., no need to follow the PRT and EBOOT steps. Just following other steps in this forum.

Does anyone knows if voice nevigation is supported in MapThis 0.5.20. If so then how to set it up.

Also, how is the "X" button (Maker Set/Off) works.

Nieko
December 5th, 2007, 10:39
Voice navigation has been supported for some time already, so also in MapThis 0.520. You need to place messageXXX.mp3 files (where XXX = 001, 002, etc.) in system/sounds/, and make sure your route files point to these files (i.e., they should end with e.g. ",1," for message001.mp3).

The marker is simply used to see how far it is from A to B. You can create extra segments using the circle button.

Infranetdog

Thanks Nieko......

I have the mp3 files you mentioned in \PSP\GAME\mapViewer\system\SOUNDS

All I heard from the PSP is "Speed Warning"

My real question, is MapThis 0.5.20 support Automatic Route Select with Voice Navigation.

e.g., Can I set a destination in the map and the PSP will voice prompt me to turn left/right until I arrived.

Thanking in advice for your time and help.

Nieko
December 5th, 2007, 20:50
No, MapThis can't do that (yet). You will need to download routes beforehand using GMDL or http://getroute.nieko.net/.

Infranetdog
December 5th, 2007, 21:33
After I created the POI file using http://getroute.nieko.net/

What should I do with the file?
e.g., put it in which folder on the PSP and how to use it.

Thanks.

philiphili
December 5th, 2007, 22:52
Put The POI file in PSP/COMMON. Afterwards go to Mapthis than when your map is loaded press the start button on your PSP. Now you should see a menu with different buttons. Click on the button POI Lookup and in the next screen select your POI and thats it. You should see your route now, voice prompts included.

Good luck,
Philip

My GPS is working, but when i'm driving, it keeps saying 'speed warning' for no reason, ie. I'm well within the limit.

Anyone know why it does this?

Thanks

Nieko
December 15th, 2007, 14:51
In system/config.txt you can specify the speed limit above which Map This! will give you a warning, using the directive SPEEDLIMIT. This takes the SPEEDFIX into account, so you can simply specify it in km/h or mph.

pppsssooo
December 17th, 2007, 07:46
nvm i read up... may i ask one thing tho. May i ask if your ever gona or mapthis will ever have the function so where i would be able to set destinations etc in the psp i know you said its not possible atm or wasnt put in but if ya could its something i would Gladly pay for ^^.

You wont have the right PRX files specifically for your PSP's firmware.

you need:

usbacc.prx

and

usbgps.prx

You can download them from here:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/yby9xh

I've personally just uploaded them for you.

Now replace the prx files in your Mapviewer folder with them, start up your Mapthis! and it should work ok.

Thanks

i think sendspace.com was having some trouble. If you try again now that should be sorted. you get a link at the bottom of the screen, so just click that once it appears and you can download the files.

if you get a popup screen, just click : skip offers

in the top right corner, then you'll be onto the download page.

hope it works this time!
