Total War: Rome II will take the franchise back to one of its most popular and often requested settings. The PC title will once again challenge players to lead vast armies in massive real-time battles.
There will also be a strong emphasis on the era's political scheming, as players must balance their military tasks with maintaining the loyalty of the senate and the safety of their family.
"In our 25th years of games development, it feels fitting to return to our most critically acclaimed era," said Creative Assembly's brand director Rob Bartholomew.
"There's been a multi-generational leap in technology since the original game and we are ready to set another benchmark in gaming."
Creative director Mike Simpson added: “Our games have always encompassed a grand vision. But we’re now pushing that vision at both ends of the spectrum. From the immense reach of the sandbox campaign right down to the human-level drama of a single warrior on the battlefield, we’re aiming for an unprecedented level of detail and scale”.
The Total War series was highlighted as one of Sega's key pillars in the company's ongoing restructure. It is one of four franchises that will continue to be released at retail, alongside Sonic, Football Manager and Aliens.
