Lending further gravity to the proposed crackdown being bandied about in British parliament, an Essex teen has been arrested for sending a BBM that ran afoul of the Serious Crime Act of 2007. The 18-year old, now free on bail, allegedly used the service to encourage copycat attacks of the violent rioting that's swept London, and is set to appear in court on September 1st. It's the second known case to put RIM's private messaging service -- "popular among urban teenagers" as a cheap texting alternative -- in the UK's legal hotseat. For its part, the Canadian electronics maker has since reached out to police, promising to aid the investigation "in any way [it] can." Although no decision has yet been made to extend law enforcement's powers over social media services, such as Twitter and Facebook, arrests like these seem to indicate a murky free speech future.

It looks like the sly fox is ready to make its worldwide debut a few days early. In typical Mozilla fashion, a complete build of Firefox 6 is now unofficially available for your downloading pleasure, three days ahead of schedule. If you're looking for a major facelift to the desktop edition, you won't find one here -- most of the new features aren't cosmetic. Perhaps most visibly, you'll find the domain name of the page you're parked on highlighted in the address bar. On the Android side, version 6 makes much bigger promises, like a "fresh visual style in Chrome Gingerbread," enhanced image scaling, and, perhaps most importantly, it's "faster and uses less memory." We've downloaded the desktop version of the browser ourselves, and we've found the release quite snappy. If you're not afraid of a little pre-release downloading, you can catch the (desktop) fox at the source links below. And as per usual, please let us know how it's treating you.

UK Club Nintendo members will soon be given the chance to win free tickets to London's Zelda Symphony tour, Nintendo has told Eurogamer.
The London concert is the only fixture of the Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony tour planned for Europe. It will feature a live orchestra performing music from throughout the Legend of Zelda series.
"UK Club Nintendo members will soon be able to receive information regarding a special chance to win free tickets to the London performance," Nintendo told Eurogamer today. "More details on this will be released soon."
Normally tickets prices for the event start at £38.50. The most expensive seats cost £110.50 and include the chance to meet members of the orchestra after the show.
Nintendo's competition is a consolation for UK fans yet to buy tickets, and it comes as the company cleared up confusion over a previous offer that listed Zelda tickets at a cheaper price for all UK Club Nintendo members.
Nintendo fans were offered a 15 per cent discount on tickets when purchased with a special Club Nintendo code, but this code was exclusive to US Club Nintendo fans. This was an error and has now been amended, Nintendo clarified to Eurogamer today.
Gamers were previously able to select the discounted tickets, which had the cheaper prices visible, although were then unable to complete their purchases due to Nintendo not having issued the necessary code to redeem the offer.
US Club Nintendo members are currently being offered that same 15 per cent discount when buying tickets for the tour's Los Angeles leg. Gamers simply enter the word "Zelda" to unlock the cheaper price.
But this promotion is only for American gamers, Nintendo has now clarified: "This is a special offer only available to US Club Nintendo members and as such has been removed. We would like to apologise for any confusion caused," Nintendo explained.
Tickets for the Zelda 25th Anniversary tour are currently still available via Ticketmaster.

Sony has offered a free PSP and games to a man who was videoed being mugged for his console during the London riots earlier this week.
Sony Europe marketing director Alan Duncan revealed the move in the comments section of a website set up to "do something nice for Ashraf Haziq", offering to replace the 20-year-old's PSP that was taken from his bag.

In a video (below) that appalled the nation, looters were seen to steal the system from Haziq's bag as he stood bleeding in the street.

"I'm the marketing director for PlayStation UK," Duncan posted under the username 'albinolove33'. "[We'd] like to give him a new PSP and games. Let me know the best way of getting in touch with Ashraf or the hospital. Thanks."

Sony is also one of the many victims of the London riots. A Sony warehouse in Enfield was set ablaze late on Monday night as unrest swept the capital.

A number of Japanese analysts have claimed Nintendo's failure to embrace the smartphone market illustrates "how behind the times they are".
Masamitsu Ohki, a fund manager at Tokyo-based Stats Investment Management, told Bloomberg: "Smartphones are the new battlefield for the gaming industry. Nintendo should try to either buy its way into this platform or develop something totally new."

Nintendo affiliate the Pokemon Co. announced plans to release an official Pokemon game for iOS and Android devices back in July, boosting the platform holder's shares the most in almost four months, but the gains were soon surrendered when Nintendo said its strategy of developing software only for its own hardware "hasn't changed and won't change".

That led MF Global FXA Securities to say: "They just don't get it. Sell the stock, because a management once feted for creative out-of-box thinking have just shown how behind the times they are."

Following Nintendo's poor first quarter financial results, investors are also calling on the company to make better use of the over $10 billion in cash reserves it holds.

"Nintendo should aggressively make acquisitions or increase returns to its shareholders," said Tetsuro Ii, president of Tokyo-based Commons Asset Management, which held 2,200 Nintendo shares as of February. "It's management's task to consider how to make use of the cash."

Nintendo's last acquisition was the May 2007 purchase of Xenoblade developer Monolith Software.

Speaking last month, Nintendo's Iwata also dismissed the possibility of granting licenses for the company's intellectual property to outside firms. "It might be true that we could increase our short-term profit by granting licenses for our popular software assets in various ways. But what would happen to Nintendo's future if these assets were fully depleted by licensees?

"I could make such decisions if I were responsible only for our profits for this fiscal year. But, as I am also responsible for Nintendo's mid-to-long-term vision, we have to create special content which will not be easily depleted and preserve the value of such content to keep our business competitive."

    2. Nintendo 3DS News

Nintendo is officially dropping the Nintendo 3DS price tomorrow, but many retailers across the UK have gone early with mass price reductions.

Having sold just 700,000 units in the three months ending June 30. Nintendo was left with little choice but to take action and duly announced plans to slash the 3DS price by a third.

If you've always wanted a 3DS but have been holding out, now's your time to strike. But before you sprint to the nearest electronics store, you might fancy a look at who's selling it the cheapest.

Play's current cheapest offer is still a whopping £196.99, placing it marginally behind Zavvi's £196.85.

GameGears is offering a price of 194.99, followed closely by HMV, which currently has the 3DS at £189.99, the next cheapest being Dixons at £169.99.

GameStop started offering 3DS at under £135 earlier this week, and from tomorrow you're going to see some similarly competitive deals.

Game is offering bundles with Zelda: Ocarina of Time strapped to the console for £159.99 in store and £154.99 online with free delivery. The console alone is priced at 149.99.

Also coming down from the £190 region tomorrow is Gamestation. It brings the same deals to the table as Game with Zelda bundles at £159.99 in store and £154.99 online.

3DS consoles are listed on Amazon UK at £155.00. However, a source at the giant web retailer claimed that this figure may soon see a 25-30 percent reduction.

If you're really serious about finding the best bargain, you might want to check in-store at the following retailers. Seen advertised in papers today, Morrison's has cut the price to £120.00. You'd be forgiven for imagining it was an unbeatable price but, coming in at £115.00, Tesco currently has the lowest priced systems anywhere.

But wait, there's more. Curry's and PC World will price-match any of the above stores located within a 30 mile radius with a further 10 percent discount on top! That means that if there's a Tesco near your local Curry's - and let's face it, there probably is - you'll be able to pick up a 3DS console for just over £100.
