    An anonymous reader points out a Wired story about some of the efforts behind CyanogenMod, a popular piece of Android modification software. Quoting:"CyanogenMod expanded into a team of 35 different 'device maintainers,' who manage the code for the 32 different devices that the project supports. Like Google, the team publishes its code to an online repository and accepts online submissions for changes to the code from other developers. Seven core members decide which of the submitted changes make it into the next release of CyanogenMod, and which don’t. ... Ultimately, CyanogenMod aspires to be more than just a software mod. 'I think one of our biggest dreams is to see a phone ship with Cyanogen on it,' says Soyars. But pairing the software with a phone is no easy task. First, CyanogenMod would have to pass the tests required by Google’s certification program in order to bundle Google’s proprietary apps — Gmail, Calendar, etc. — on the phone."http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/11/...n-Android-Hack ...

    Legendary Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning hasn't directly been involved in the development of a video game since 2005 Xbox exclusive Stranger's Wrath.
    After the game's launch Lanning shuttered his development studio and relocated to the San Francisco Bay area to focus on television and film.
    Will he ever make another game?
    "We're looking at this all the time," he told Eurogamer.
    "They way I'm looking now is, how do I turn YouTube and Facebook into one game? That's the game-ified thing I'm focused on right now. If we figure that out, and I think we have, then it's a game changer.
    "If we're successful with that, which is the intent, then we'll have the money to finance and go back to the Oddworld we all know and love."
    Lanning has commissioned Leeds developer Just Add Water to remake classic Oddworld games for release on multiple platforms.
    Last year JAW released the Oddboxx on Steam, a collection including Abe's Oddysee, Abe's Exoddus, Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath for PC. It's due out on the PlayStation 3 as a PlayStation Network game at some point in the summer.
    JAW is also working on a high definition remake of Munch's Oddysee, a RTS spin-off called Hand of Odd, and is contemplating creating a brand new Oddworld game.
    But Lanning will direct neither game.
    "Oddworld was a company that was started but never had an exit strategy," the California-based entrepreneur said. "It was about creating a universe that I cared about, that I loved, that I thought would have nutritious value for the world, that you could enjoy with a light heart, and also contemplate with a brain.
    "It is very close to my heart.
    "The reason we haven't done certain things with the property is because we didn't want to give up control to it, because we still have a lot of plans.
    "But plans were made to be broken, in that you have to adjust to the shifting tides of what's occurring, and then you can figure out how best to come back to it.
    "Am I going to make something again? Absolutely. The question is in what format, and what does that look like, and in what genre? That I'm not sure about. But there's a reason we still have Oddworld: it's because we love it."

    This is actually a little old, but the site's been down the whole time...

    Just to keep the 32X homebrew scene going, here's a quick port of xrick - the cross-platform (SDL) Rick Dangerous clone. This is the full game done for the 32X; personally, I think the Genesis version released earlier is a lot more impressive since you're pushing the system, while it's barely straining the 32X. As usual, it includes the code for those who wish to make changes or just see how it was done.

    This runs on emulators or real hardware, but as with my other stuff, it uses DMA for the audio, so the audio may not be quite right on some emulators.

    Controls
    UP = Jump/Climb Up
    DOWN = Crouch/Crawl/Climb Down
    LEFT = Go Left
    RIGHT = Go Right
    A = Action Button - hold A and press a direction
    A + UP = Shoot Gun
    A + DOWN = Set Dynamite
    A + LEFT/RIGHT = Jab with Stick
    C = End
    START = Pause/Resume
    X = Mute
    Y = Volume Down
    Z = Volume Up
    MODE + X = Cheat 1
    MODE + Y = Cheat 2
    MODE + Z = Cheat 3

    An article at Eurogamer argues that even with a successor to the Wii on the horizon, the console arms race we've watched over the past few decades is in the process of changing dramatically, with base hardware taking a back seat to software and peripherals."Even the most basic yardstick for console improvements has become a little hard to read. It used to seem like a reliable idea that every five years or so, consoles would catch up to the PC — a platform which sees advancements every few weeks — and remain competitive for a while, before the PC's cutting-edge accelerated away. ... However, the upgrade cycle appears to have slowed considerably — with games that actually demand cutting-edge systems being few and far between, and core gamers far more likely to continue happily playing on two-, three- or even four-year-old PCs than they were in the past. ... If not a halt to progress, this is certainly a slowing — and probably one which is welcomed in most quarters. Consumers love improvements in graphical quality, but most would probably prefer to see any major increase in development budget being spent elsewhere — more detailed content, more expansive storytelling, more progress in areas that have been neglected in the former headlong rush to cram more polygons and effects onto every screen."http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/0...s-Race-Stalled ...

    A new report has surfaced that claims the Wii 2 controller will have a camera on.
    The camera will be front-facing, according to a Develop source - and will take in-game pictures. Will it use augmented reality technology likeSmartAR, the impressive-sounding Sony invention revealed yesterday?
    The Develop source went on to back rumours that the Wii 2 controller features a six-inch touch-screen that "possibly" uses a stylus. The pad will have buttons, too.
    Sounds a lot like a 3DS - a similarity the source speculated about.
    "The functions are the same. It is a standard wireless controller added with a front-facing camera and touch screen," said the source. "That sounds far too much like a 3DS to me. But I can't confirm this, Nintendo is being very cautious about the details."
    Develop heard that in an attempt to avoid leaks, Nintendo was not showing the console to all development partners.
    Nintendo will unveil Wii 2 - codenamed Project Cafe - at E3 next month. So far its been a complete secret.

    Specialist retailer GameStop has said that it expects sales of Nintendo's 3DS to be below expectations during the second quarter after a strong launch in the US.

    Yesterday the company called out the system as one of the key drivers for record sales and profits in its first quarter, having secured huge numbers of the handheld for launch.

    During a call to investors, president Tony Bartell noted the 3DS represented "one of our highest market shares we've ever had on a Nintendo launch, 45 per cent. We were excited about our market share."

    He added: "I think there has been reports that the numbers are lagging from what the expectations were for the US and I think our results would be in line with that in Q2.

    "We do expect that we will fall slightly short of what we expected. So we were excited to launch, but in Q2, we do believe that it will slightly lag our expectations."

    Sales of the 3DS did not meet Nintendo's initial launch expectations, with the system moving under 400,000 in its North American debut - below the 460,000 units of its predecessor the DS.

    Analysts have also claimed sales of the 3DS have slowed considerably, following a period of few new software releases.

    A joint statement from Rockstar Games and Sony has claimed that reports of PlayStation 3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire are not due to either the game or the recent 3.61 firmware update.
    Previously Rockstar blamed the firmware update for reports of overheats, and claimed that the issue affected other non-Rockstar games. Later that day Rockstar removed these comments, while also admitting of problems with the Xbox 360 version of the game.
    The statement issued overnight claims that only a "very small number" of complaints have been received and that, "at this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat."
    "We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise," continues the statement - before providing a series of contact details for both Rockstar and Sony technical support.
    The series of public statements are unusual in that before they were made there had been little public reporting of the problem, particularly in regards to games other than L.A. Noire.
    If the issues are not specific to either the game or the firmware it is unclear why it has only come to light now or whether the underlying problem is software or hardware.
