With motion controllers now commonplace, many have speculated that being able to play games using only the power of thought is the next boundary for developers to break down. Indeed, a few primitive prototypes are already out there.
However, according to the man responsible for creating the PlayStation Move peripheral, this sort of space-age tech is not something that Sony is currently interested in chasing.
"That's where it always ends up because the final end everyone thinks of, the ultimate end is the brain experience," said Sony R&D's special project manager Dr. Richard Marks when asked by Gamasutra what the next technological paradigm shift for the industry might be.
"But I think the brain interface thing is too far. Actually I think the body should stay connected. Like having your, you know, adrenaline pumping.
"When you play some of the experiences like Rock Band where you break into a sweat playing the drums, those things are good. I like those things. I don't want to remove all of that.
"Some people just say, 'If I could just get rid of all those human body problems...' I don't agree with that. I like it when it's connected. So I'd rather get more information about what they're doing. A lot of expression comes through what you do with your hands and your body, so."
Elsewhere in the interview, Marks also delivered his verdict on Microsoft's competing Kinect system. He explained how he was a big fan of camera control in general but only for "a fairly narrow set of experiences".
"It's really good for dancing. There's no way you could argue that. It's great for dancing," he argued.
"But it's not so good for maybe first person shooters or an RTS. Those kinds of things just don't really make as much sense for that by itself. So I think that it's a good tool, again, but it doesn't solve all the problems of video games by any stretch."
Marks added that he was impressed by how well Kinect had integrated voice recognition but insisted the technology still had a long way to go.
"I think that actually [Kinect] does better in that area than I expected it to do. I tried Kinect on the voice networks, it's better than I expected. But it's tough, it's still very stiff. You have to speak the way it wants you to speak. And you have to kind of modify yourself to match it. You watch Star Trek and they just talk to the computers whenever they want, as if it's just another person.
"We're still quite a ways away from it knowing whether you're talking to it or to another person in the room. And not having to really treat it so stiffly, I guess. I think that's not quite there yet. But I think it's good, I think it's a good vector. There's a lot of powerful information that can come out of voice."

The basic Next Generation Portable model will cost $250 and the 3G model $350, a Ubisoft survey suggests.
Research firm Toluna conducted a survey asking consumers if they'd be happy to pay the asking price for Sony's PlayStation Portable successor this week on behalf of Assassin's Creed publisher Ubisoft.
Kotaku reported the survey gauged purchase intent based on the expected price of the different NGP models.
"The retail price of the Sony NGP is expected to be around $350," says the survey in reference to the premium model. It asks: "How likely would you be to purchase the Sony NGP now that you know this retail price?"
Sony is yet to put an official price stamp on the powerful handheld, but told Eurogamer it will be "affordable". "I can't put a ballpark on it in terms of figures, but what I would say is that we will shoot for an affordable price that's appropriate for the handheld gaming space," Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Andrew House told Eurogamer January. All NGP devices will have wi-fi capability; a separate SKU will have 3G.
"So the user gets a choice," House explained. "Wi-fi is available wherever, which clearly is the most important aspect of connectivity and that connected experience; 3G will be a subset of that."

Apple Inc. has changed how purchases inside iPhone and iPad games are authorized after customers complained that their kids were racking up hundreds of dollars worth of charges. The issue was that after a user entered his or her iTunes password on a device, the device didn't prompt for the password again for 15 minutes. Any purchases, whether in the iTunes store or inside kid-friendly games such as 'The Smurf's Village,' went through without a new password prompt. This meant that parents who handed over their iPhones or iPads to their kids were sometimes shocked by large purchases of 'Smurfberries' and other virtual bling."http://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/0...p-iTunes-Bills ...

The NPD Group has told GamesIndustry.biz that it is working towards including digital sales data in its monthly reports.
Video game publishers have been critical of NPD stats as digital formats grow, with EA going so far as stating that the data it releases to the public is a "a misrepresentation of the entire industry".
But the NPD's Anita Frazier told GamesIndustry.biz that it has been making further investment in its online consumer panels and intends to increase the frequency of its digital reports - which also include revenue from subscriptions, DLC, mobile, social and rental businesses - from quarterly to monthly.
It will become increasingly challenging for the financial community to create proper valuations of companies in the absence of an objective third-party source covering the entire market
    Anita Frazier, NPD Group.

"We are expanding the number of digital retailers we have relationships with in order to develop a digital POS (point of sale) service," said Frazier.
"The goal is to provide our clients with a total POS games tracking service that incorporates the growing digital channel as well as the currently predominant physical format, and to deliver this at the same frequency as we currently do for new physical retail sales (monthly)."
NPD estimates that boxed retail sales still account for 60 per cent of the US market, but it also acknowledges that current sales reporting does not paint the full picture. Frazier said she also expects publishers and digital distributors themselves to be more open with their digital sales figures in the future.
"We expect it to happen, especially as digital grows to become a larger portion of the consumer's overall spend.
"It will become increasingly challenging for the financial community to create proper valuations of companies in the absence of an objective third-party source covering the entire market, and it will be harder for companies to manage their businesses and resources without visibility into all forms of distribution."

Birmingham NEC gathering GAMEfest to take place between September 16th-18th

Leading UK games retailer GAME has tonight at London's video game BAFTAs announced that it is to stage its first UK consumer games show later this year.
Called GAMEfest, the event is actually an extension of the retailer's store manager conference. Entry will be reserved exclusively for Reward Card customers.

It's scheduled to take place at the Birmingham NEC between September 16th-18th – that's exactly one week before the Eurogamer Expo is held at Earls Court in London.
Last year the retailer held its first ever GAMEfest event in Madrid.
MCV will have more details on the gathering at a later date.
